MEDFORD, Mass. - Sophomore center fielder Robbie Lamond (North Kingstown, R.I.) tied the school record for hits in a game, going 6-6, while senior first baseman Timmy Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) had three hits including a home run and drove in five runs leading the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team to a thrilling 14-11 come-from-behind win this afternoon over host Tufts University in 10 innings at Sol Gittleman Park in Medford, Mass.
The Lyons improved to 3-2 on the season, while the Jumbos drop to 2-2.
Lamond had two doubles and a triple to fall a homer shy of hitting for the cycle, while scoring three runs, stealing a base and driving in a pair of runs. He becomes just the fourth player in school history to collect six hits in a game and the first since Eric Laliberte rapped out six hits against Clark University (Mass.) on April 2, 2009.
Sophomore third baseman Casey Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) had three hits including a double and drove in a pair of runs, while sophomore catcher Tyler Bellan (Franklin, Mass.) also had two hits as Wheaton finished with a season-high18 hits.
Bellan's RBI single broke an 11-11 tie in the tenth. Wheaton added a run on a double play before Lamond's RBI double pushed the score to 14-11.
Senior left-handed reliever Josh Fischer (Hopkinton, Mass.), the seventh Lyon pitcher of the day, allowed just one hit and struck out two in the bottom of the tenth to pick up his first save of the season. Senior Liam Goldthwaite (Briantree, Mass.) (1-1) got the win in relief after allowing a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth on two hits and two walks to go with a strikeout.
Wheaton scored twice in the top of the ninth as Wensley delivered an RBI double scoring two runs for the 11-9 lead.
The Jumbos forced extra innings as they loaded the bases with no outs and tied the game with a pair of runs in the home half, tying the game on a squeeze play by junior Jesse Mccullough (Sudbury, Mass.).
Tufts led 3-0 before Wheaton took the lead with four runs in the fourth. Lamond got the Lyons on the board with an RBI triple before Wagner belted a three-run homer for the 4-3 lead.
The Jumbos regained the lead with three runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh for an 8-4 lead.
Wheaton erupted for five in the eighth. Bellan had an RBI single before both sophomore outfielder Shawn Cali (East Taunton, Mass) and Wensley drew bases loaded walks to make the score 8-7. Wagner would again deliver the big hit, a two-run double down the left field line as Wheaton regained the lead 9-8.
Tufts sophomore Max Pavlik's (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) solo homer in the bottom of the eighth tied the game 9-9.
Graduate student Ozzie Fleischer (Fort Worth, Texas) had three hits and drove in three for the Jumbos while senior Cooper Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also had three hits for Tufts, who finished with 15 hits.
Freshman Landon Meng (0-1) took the loss in relief allowing four runs, three earned in 1 ? innings.
The Lyons are back in action on Wednesday, March 12 when they take on Immaculata University at 10:00 a.m. in Auburndale, Fla. while Tufts travels to Providence, R.I. to play at Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
