SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Senior Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) won the 100 meters to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team today at the Black & Gold Invitational hosted by Bryant University at the Track and Turf Complex in Smithfield, R.I.
Peterson clocked in with a mark of 10.82 to rank as the sixth-fastest time in school history. The senior won the event among NCAA Division I, II and III competitors. First year Gael Vera (Westminster, Mass.) placed eighth in the race with a time of 11.08, while junior GJ Mualis (Taunton, Mass.) was 16th with a mark of 11.35.
Senior Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.48 to lead a strong contingent for the Lyons. Sophomore Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) finished 14th with a time of 17.16, while first year Gavin Landry (Westbrook, Maine) was 15th with a personal-record time of 17.25 and classmate Joshua Wright (Gorham, Maine) was 18th with a personal-best mark of 17.94.
Smith was active for Wheaton, leading off the 4X100-meter relay, followed by Vera, senior Ryan Ventura (South Easton, Mass.) and Peterson in a combined time of 42.61 to finish third.
Sophomore Cam Cross-Chinn (Newport, R.I.) made his collegiate debut for the Lyons by placing fifth in the javelin throw with a heave of 47.70 meters to rank as the seventh-best throw in school history.
Wheaton's other relay entry placed fourth with a time of 3:34.69 in the 4x400-meter relay. The first year quartet was led by Travis C. James (Hamden, Conn.), who set the tone, before Wright and first year Aidan Greenleaf (Topsham, Maine) set up Landry for the last 100 meters.
Junior Griffen Copp (Littleton, Mass.) finished 12th in the shot put for the Lyons on a heave of 11.92 meters, while sophomore Logan Quinn (Portsmouth, R.I.) was 18th at 9.93 meters and first year Kieran Templeton (Glens Falls, N.Y.) was 19th with a mark of 9.49 meters. Smith showed his versatility with a distance of 9.38 to place 21st in the event.
Junior Kai Hillier (Hinesburg, Vt.) led Wheaton's distance runners with a personal-record time of 1:59.17 in the 800 meters to finish 17th. Junior Aris Giatrakos (Stoughton, Mass.) finished 25th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.06, ahead of senior Will Singer's (Los Angeles, Calif.) personal-record clip of 24.22 to finish 27th.
Senior Noah White (Winchester, Mass.) was the Lyons' top finisher in the 1500 meters with a mark of 4:14.81 to finish 40th, while first year Dan McIntyre (Keene, N.H.) was 50th and classmate Finn Morris (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was 59th, both with personal-best times of 4:24.69 and 4:35.96, respectively. Junior Nick Lacroix (Bedford, N.H.) placed 46th in the 5000 meters with a time of 16:13.56 and first year Nathan Pires (Yarmouth, Maine) was 47th with a personal-best mark of 17:01.81.
Wheaton returns to the track on Friday, April 4 when it travels to Weston, Mass. to compete in the Regis Spring Classic at 10:00 a.m.
