Baseball Defeated at Springfield in Game One, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team fell at Springfield College, 3-0, in the first game of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Archie Allen Field in Springfield, Mass.

Wheaton drops to 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC while Springfield improves to 5-12 overall and 1-1 in conference play. 

Junior catcher Ryan Duffy's (Stafford Springs, Conn.) two-run triple in the second gave the Pride a 2-0 lead and junior shortstop Jack Dunaisky's (Longmeadow, Mass.) RBI single gave Springfield an insurance run in the third to close the scoring. 

Junior shortstop Ray Toth (Granby, Mass.) had two of the Lyons four hits. He had the only extra base hit for Wheaton, a double. 

Sophomore Josh Mayo (Westfield, Mass.) allowed just two hits and struck out 11 while not walking a batter in seven innings to earn his first win of the season, improving to 1-3. Sophomore center fielder Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.) had two hits including a triple for the Pride, who finished with seven hits in the win. Sophomore Steve Cifarelli (Orange, Conn.) did not allow a hit and struck out one over the final two innings to pick up his first save of the season for the Pride. 

Sophomore Aiden Cardoza (Dartmouth, Mass) took the loss to drop to 1-2 on the season. He worked seven and a third innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs while not walking a batter and fanning two.
