SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore starting pitcher Greg Strite (San Jose, Calif.) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Lyons broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning as the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team salvaged a split of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader defeating host Springfield College 14-3 in seven innings at Archie Allen Field in Springfield, Mass.
Wheaton improves to 10-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference while the Pride drop to 5-12 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.
Strite (3-0), who threw six shutout innings and picked up the win over Brandeis on Sunday, allowed three hits and two runs while issuing two walks and striking out five to get the win. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before senior left fielder Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) broke it up with a two-out single in the sixth. He walked junior shortstop Jack Dunsaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) with one out in the second, the only batter that had reached base before an error in the fifth.
Senior first baseman Timmy Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) was 4-5 and drove in five runs to lead the Lyons' 14-hit attack. Senior left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) added three hits. Senior second baseman Tommy Beauregard (Salem, Mass.) and sophomore center fielder Robbie Lamond (North Kingstown, R.I.)Â each had two hits while sophomore Nick Ayres (Duxbury, Mass.) drove in three, with a three-run homer, in the win.Â
The Lyons got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI single Wagner scoring Lamond, who singled and stole second.
Wagner's RBI double in the third gave Wheaton a 2-0 lead. Sophomore third baseman Casey Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to increase the lead to 3-0.
Wheaton added eight runs, all unearned, in the fifth to take a commanding 11-0 lead.
Junior designated hitter Justin Colpack (Easthampton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and pinch runner, first year Declan Lush (Seekonk, Mass) scored on an error to spark the inning. Sophomore right fielder Shawn Cali (East Taunton, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center before an RBI single by Beauregard gave the Lyons a 6-0 lead. Wagner added a two-run single pushing the lead to 8-0. Ayres delivered a pinch hit, three-run homer to left, giving the Lyons an 11-0 lead.
The Lyons added three more in the sixth as Wensley and Wagner had RBI singles in the inning making the score 14-0.
Springfield scored three runs in the seventh sophomore right fielder Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.) had an RBI single before a two-run single by sophomore catcher Dan Surette.
Sophomore Ryan Delaney (Ellington, Conn.) (0-2) took the loss for Springfield after pitching the first three innings and allowing four hits and two runs.
Wheaton is back in action on Tuesday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m. in a NEWMAC game against Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro, Mass., while Springfield will host Salve Regina University on Tuesday in a conference game at 3:00 p.m.
