BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) shattered a pair of school records, while placing among the top three in both events today at The Showdown at the Heights Velocity Cup hosted by Boston College at The Track at New Balance in Boston, Mass.
Peterson achieved his historic day against NCAA Division I, II and III competitors in addition to sprinters from unattached clubs for the Lyons. He placed second in the 60 meters with a time of 6.85 to smash the previous school standard set by Michael Wright '09 at the Dartmouth Relays on January 13, 2008. Peterson's day continued to get better, gathering himself to post a school-record mark of 21.65, just 20 minutes later, to finish third in the 200 meters. His time obliterated the previous school mark by 1.4 tenths of a second. Rayian Banaji '11 established the former mark of 21.79 on February 27, 2010 at the All-New England Championship at Boston University. The times in both events for Peterson rank him 14th in all of NCAA Division III this season.
Wheaton first year Gael Vera (Westminster, Mass.) also enjoyed great success with a personal-record time of 22.29 to finish 11th in the 200 meters, while posting a mark of 7.04 to place fifth in the 60 meters. Senior Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) continued his outstanding season with a third-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles on a time of 8.40 for his fourth top-three finish in the event in as many meets. First year Joshua Wright (Gorham, Maine) turned in a time of 9.01 to finish seventh in the race for the Lyons.
Senior John Dowgiert (Methuen, Mass.) clocked in at 50.80 to finish 10th in the 400 meters for Wheaton, while first year Harrison Page (South Berwick, Maine) registered a personal-record mark of 51.76 to place 15th in the race.
The Lyons saw four runners post personal-record times in the 200 meters with senior Ryan Ventura (South Easton, Mass.) crossing the finish at 24th with sophomore Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) a step behind in 25th with a personal-best mark of 21.10. First year Travis C. James (Hamden, Conn.) continued the theme with a personal-record time of 23.24 to finish 27th and senior GJ Mualis (Taunton, Mass.) followed suit with his best clip at 23.29 to place 28th.
Wheaton also finished first in the 4000-meter distance medley relay with a time of 11:04.64 behind junior Nick Lacroix (Bedford, N.H.), junior Aris Giatrakos (Stoughton, Mass.), first year Dan McIntyre (Keene, N.H.) and senior Noah White (Winchester, Mass.).
Junior Griffen Copp (Littleton, Mass.) led the Lyons' throwers with a ninth-place finish with a heave of 11.67 meters in the shot put.
Wheaton returns to Boston tomorrow when it competes in The Showdown at the Heights Endurance Challenge at 10:00 a.m.
