WORCESTER, Mass. — Junior Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle and helped the 200-yard medley relay squad finish as the runner-up to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team on Day Three of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the WPI Sports & Recreation Center in Worcester, Mass.
The Lyons finished the day with 449 points to solidify their third-place standing, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology sits in first by a wide margin with 1113 points, followed by United States Coast Guard Academy at 506.
Stone shaved 0.83 seconds off her personal-best time in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.58 to place second for Wheaton, while sophomore Anna St. Jean (Alexandria, Va.) finished ninth in the event with a time of 1:58.01 after setting a personal-record mark of 1:57.87 in the morning preliminary. Junior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) placed 11th with a mark of 1:57:29 in the consolation final and classmate Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.) eclipsed her personal-record mark in the race by 0.65 seconds at 1:57.51 to finish 12th for the Lyons.
Stone swam the butterfly leg in the 200-yard medley relay for Wheaton ahead of senior Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who opened the race with the backstroke, before yielding to junior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio), in the breaststroke. Senior Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) closed out the race's final 50 yards with the freestyle anchor to secure a time of 1:45.44 to place second in the event.
Hartmann picked up a top-three finish of her own for the Lyons, placing third in the 100-yard backstroke with a personal-best mark of 55.89. Lambert-Shemo scored in the 100-yard breaststroke for Wheaton, placing sixth with a time of 1:06.99, while senior Caris Mann (Hanover, Mass.) finished 11th in the race with a personal-record mark of 1:07.82.
Sophomore Kaleigh Morton (Milford, Conn.) led the Lyons with a 14th-place effort in the 400-yard individual medley after touching the wall at 4:45.31. Senior Alexa DiCenso (Methuen, Mass.) finished 16th in the race with a mark of 4:46.24 and sophomore Grace Chin (Blooming Grove, N.Y.) was 20th with a time of 5:01.30. Walz picked up points in the 100-yard butterfly, placing 14th with a time of 59.52.
Wheaton will look to move up during the title meet's final day, starting tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. at the prelims in Worcester, Mass.
