WALTHAM, Mass. — Sophomore Oliver Smink (Rochester, N.Y.) earned eight wins in sabre and classmate Grant Smith (Oakland, Calif.) recorded seven victories in foil in five varsity matches and an exhibition today at the Carla-Mae Richards Invitational hosted by Brandeis University at Red Auerbach Arena in Waltham, Mass.
The Lyons fell to Drew University, St. John's University (N.Y.), Lawrence University and a pair of matches to Pennsylvania State University in varsity competition. Wheaton suffered a setback to Cornell University in exhibition action as well.
The Lyons nipped Drew in both the foil and the sabre by identical 5-4 counts, but the Rangers took eight of nine epee bouts to take the match, 16-11. Wheaton first year Charles Pedersen (Shoreham, N.Y.) was a perfect 3-0 in foil with 5-4 wins over first year Nico Angelos (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and sophomore Jason Sobon (Holmdel, N.J.) to go with a 5-1 triumph over first year Nathaniel Ferrone (Palm Beach, Fla.). First year Solomon Taylor (Evanston, Ill.) recorded a pair of wins. He defeated Ferrone, 5-1, and took down Sobon, 5-3. First year Jonathan Quail (Scotia, N.Y.) was also unblemished in the match, winning all three sabre bouts. He shut out Nicholas Machado (Hillside, N.J.), 5-0, before putting together a 5-3 victory over sophomore Jason Ahlman (Swedesboro, N.J.) and a 5-2 decision over sophomore Bryan Cipriano-Goines (Bayonne, N.J.). Smink took two of three bouts for the Lyons. He outlasted Cipriano-Goines, 5-4, and downed Machado, 5-3. Wheaton first year Jun-Ho Chen (Middletown, N.Y.) picked up the lone point in epee with a 4-3 decision over sophomore Jackson Howard (Guilford, Conn.).
The Lyons won four of nine matches in the sabre of an 18-9 defeat to St. John's. The Red Storm surrendered three points due to forfeit in the sabre and Smink picked up the other point with a 5-4 win over sophomore Daniel Lendvai. Sophomore Phillip Nunnink (Saint Louis, Mo.) dropped just two points in his two victories at foil. He defeated both junior Bronislav Petrov and Igor Wozniak by a 5-1 score. Smith also picked up a 5-2 win over Petrov for Wheaton. Chen picked up both points in the epee with 5-3 wins over junior Adam Horvath and junior Spencer Collymore.
The Lyons' foil contingent outscored Lawrence, 5-4, but the Vikings took the overall match, 20-7. Smith won both of his foil matches for Wheaton, including a 5-0 shutout over senior Eli Levitas-Goren (Milwaukee, Wis.). He also fought to a 5-3 triumph over junior Will Martin (Chanhassen, Minn.). Pedersen and Nunnink both blanked senior Oliver Reece (Scarsdale, N.Y.), 5-0, while Taylor held Levitas-Goren without a point. Smink recorded the Lyons' lone point in the sabre against sophomore Carlos Garcia de la Puente (Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica) with a 5-3 decision and Chen earned a 5-4 win over first year Ephraim Petersen (Tacoma, Wash.) for Wheaton's point in the epee.
The Lyons tallied five points in a 22-5 setback to Penn State in the first match of the day between the schools. Wheaton captured three of its points in the foil, led by Smith with wins in two of three bouts. He took down sophomore Julian Chin (Saratoga, Calif.), 5-3, and broke a 4-4 tie with junior Matthew Gonzalez for a one-point win. Nunnink registered a 5-2 win over Gonzalez. Smink won two of three bouts to lead the Lyons' sabre. He cruised to a 5-2 victory over senior Dusan Zeljkovic (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and nipped graduate student Carlos Fernando Chacon (La Paz, Bolivia), 5-4. Wheaton's second match against the Nittany Lions resulted in a 23-2 outcome. The Lyons scored a point in both the foil and the sabre. Nunnink defeated Chin, 5-2, while Quail recorded a 5-1 victory over Chacon in the sabre.
Wheaton opened the day with a 19-7 loss to Cornell's club squad. The Lyons took three points in both the foil and sabre. Smith defeated Aaron Augusriac, 5-1, and downed Charles Bing, 5-4. Taylor notched the other point in foil for Wheaton with a 5-4 decision over Simon Choi. Smink recorded a pair of 5-4 sabre wins over Dylan Quirk and Robbie Goldman, while Quail defeated Johnson Langston, 5-4. Chen defeated Maddox Nesterczuk, 5-1, to ring up the Lyons' lone point in epee.
Wheaton returns to the strip on Saturday, January 24 when it heads to Wellesley, Mass. to compete in Northeast Conference action at host Wellesley College.
