WATERVILLE, Maine — Senior Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) scored 23 points to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team on day one of the Maine Collegiate Swimming & Diving Winter Invitational at the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center Aquatics Center in Waterville, Maine.
The Lyons tallied 83 points as a team to place fifth following the first session. No. 19 host Colby College tallied 526.5 points to sit in first place, followed by Division I University of Maine with 241 points, while Bowdoin College was just five points behind. Bates College has 231.5 points to sit in fourth place.
Stone scored points in two different events for Wheaton, including a fourth-place effort with a personal-record time of 27.07. She also placed ninth earlier in the evening with a time of 5:12.19 in the 500-yard freestyle.
Senior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) contributed with 15 points after placing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best mark of 5:06.89 for the Lyons. Classmate Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio) finished ninth in the 50-yard breaststroke fueled by a personal-record clip of 31.24 to score nine points.
Wheaton opened the meet with an eighth-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind Stone, Lambert-Shemo, Dalton and junior Anna St. Jean (Alexandria, Va.) to post a time of 1:40.02.
The Lyons closed the meet with a fifth-place effort in the mixed 400-yard medley relay. Senior Marcus Tran (Milton, Mass.) led off with the backstroke, followed by Lambert-Shemo in the breaststroke and senior Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) in the butterfly, before Stone closed out the race in the freestyle to combine for a time of 3:42.49.
Wheaton returns to Waterville tomorrow morning for the 10:00 a.m. session of the Maine Collegiate Swimming & Diving Winter Invitational.
