Women's SwimDive Sweeps Clark (142-70) and Mount Holyoke (147-80)

NORTON, Mass. – Seniors Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) and Morgen Coughlin-Doyle (Topsham, Maine) each posted a pair of first place finishes to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team to victories over visiting Clark University (142-70) and Mount Holyoke College (147-80) today at Balfour Natatorium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 6-1 on the season, while Clark falls to 1-5 following a 133-93 loss to Mount Holyoke. MHC is now 3-2.

Wheaton won 10 of the 13 events outright against both schools. The Lyons placed first in all but the final two events against Mount Holyoke and took 10 of 13 from Clark.

Walz owned the freestyle sprint events, winning the 100-yard race with a time of 2:01.91 for Wheaton, before touching first in the 100-yard event with a mark of 54.88. Coughlin-Doyle dominated the diving competition, scoring 264.22 points to place first in the one-meter board and 279.45 points to top the field on the three-meter board. 

Junior Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.) won the only event that she could officially score in with a time of 5:24.37 in the 500-yard freestyle for the Lyons.

Senior Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Alexa DiCenso (Methuen, Mass.) and junior Garin Stone (Barrington, Vt.) each tallied 13 points with a first place effort to go with a second-place showing against both schools for Wheaton. Hartmann registered the top time in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:01.86 and added a runner-up performance in the 50-yard freestyle, while DiCenso was first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:19.66 in addition to a second-place swim in the 100-yard butterfly. Stone hit the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly behind a time of 1:01.00 and also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle.

Junior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) recorded the other individual win for the Lyons, cruising to victory in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:15.50. She also scored with a fifth-place effort in the 100-yard backstroke.

Wheaton opened the meet by placing first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.17. Hartmann led off with the backstroke, before giving way to junior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo's (Cleveland, Ohio) breaststroke. Stone swam the butterfly leg, before Walz closed out the race with the final 50 yards on the freestyle anchor.

The Lyons return to the pool when they travel to Babson Park, Mass. to take on Babson College on Saturday, January 18 at 12:00 p.m.
