BOSTON/CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Kelvin Peterson (Eliot, Maine) finished 41st overall and 14th among NCAA Division III runners in the 200 meters with a personal-record time to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team today at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center in Boston, Mass.
The Lyons also competed at the Gordon Kelly Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Johnson Athletic Center in Cambridge, Mass.
The Valentine Invitational featured competitors from Division I, II and III as well as unattached competitors, who met qualifying standards to compete.
Peterson's time in the 200 meters was a lifetime best at 22.13. He also placed 15th overall and fourth among DIII competitors in the long jump with a leap of 6.39 meters. His time in the 200 was one of eight personal-record efforts on the day for Wheaton. First year Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) registered a personal-best time of 23.56 in the event, while sophomore Aris Giatrakos (Stoughton, Mass.) also posted a personal-record time of 23.95 for the Lyons.
Sophomore Kai Hillier (Hinesburg, Vt.) led the Lyons' distance runners with a second-place showing in the mile on a time of 4:26.92 at the Kelly Invitational. Sophomore Greg Araya (Westbrook, Conn.) turned in a personal-record mark of 5:15.81 in the race.
Junior Jordan Pinnix (Manchester, Conn.) finished 14th overall and fifth among DIII competitors in the invitation 60-meter hurdle preliminary with a time of 8.42 at the Valentine Invitational.
First year Andrew Fortin (Dartmouth, Mass.) ran his first 400-meter race at the collegiate level and was Wheaton's top finisher with a time of 51.96 at the Valentine Invitational. Sophomore Nathan Plympton (East Greenwich, R.I.) recorded a personal-best mark of 53.36 in the race.
Senior Matt Lambert (Hampton, N.H.) clocked in at 16:29.91 to place sixth with a personal-record time in the 5000 meters at the Kelly Invitational, while junior William Singer (Los Angeles, Calif.) was the Lyons' top runner in the 600 meters with a personal best time of 1:33.53 to place 11th at the Kelly Invitational. Sophomore David Saukkonen (Belmont, Mass.) rounded out Wheaton's competitors with personal-best efforts with a leap of 5.06 meters at the Kelly Invitational.
The Lyons compete again on February 17th in the Wheaton Pre-Post Season Meet at Beard Field House on Wheaton's campus at 11:00 a.m.
