WATERVILLE, Maine — Senior Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team with a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in the final session of the Maine Collegiate Invitational hosted by Colby College at the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center's Aquatic Center in Waterville, Maine.
The Lyons placed fifth in the three-session, two-day meet with a total of 355 points. Host Colby won the meet with a tally of 1185.5 points, while Division I University of Maine Orono finished second with 995 points. Bowdoin College was third with 695.5 points and Bates placed fourth with 488 points.
Hartmann topped the field in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.30 for Wheaton. Junior Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) placed fifth in the race with a mark of 2:07.65.
Stone also placed in the final individual event of the night with a personal-record time of 1:01.99 to finish ninth in the race. Senior Alexa DiCenso (Methuen, Mass.) was the Lyons' top performer in the event with a time of 1:01.62 to place ninth. Senior Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) was 14th with a time of 1:02.27 and junior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio) bettered her previous best time in the event by 1.64 seconds to finish at 1:03.04 for a 20th-place effort.
Wheaton junior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) shattered her previous personal standard in the 1650-yard freestyle by 10.39 seconds and posted a third-place time of 17:34.07.
Walz added a 12th-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.16 for the Lyons.
Wheaton senior diver Morgen Coughlin-Doyle (Topsham, Maine) finished seventh on the one-meter board with a mark of 229.90 points.
The Lyons closed out the meet by placing sixth in the 400-yard freestyle with a season-best mark of 3:37.16. Hartmann set the pace, followed by Walz and sophomore Anna St. Jean (Alexandria, Va.), before Stone swam the final 100 yards on the anchor.
St. Jean placed 16th was Wheaton's top swimmer in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:22.75 with classmate Grace Chin (Blooming Grove, N.Y.) right behind her at 2:23.83 to finish 17th. Senior Caris Mann (Hanover, Mass.) clocked in at 2:35.84 to finish 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke and sophomore Kelsey Callaghan (Vestal, N.Y.) was 19th in the race with a time of 2:38.83.
The Lyons return to competition after the New Year when they host Clark University on Friday, January 10 at 11:00 a.m.
