BRISTOL, R.I. – Junior Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) won a pair of races to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team on the first day of the Chris Fisher Invitational hosted by Roger Williams University at the Aquatics Center in Bristol, R.I.
The Lyons sit in third place with 312 points behind first place Roger Williams (468) and Babson College (384).
Stone tallied 40 points on the first day of the meet. She touched first in the 500-yard freestyle by more than eight seconds with a time of 5:13.02, before winning the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:09.67. She also swam the lead leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay to help Wheaton finish third in the event. Junior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio) and seniors Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) combined with Stone to post a time of 1:40.01.
Junior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) contributed with 26 points for the Lyons. She scored in two different events, highlighted by her runner-up effort in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.33. She also placed ninth in the 100-yard freestyle.
With Stone leading the way, Wheaton boasted the top two finishers in the 200-yard backstroke, including sophomore Kaleigh Morton (Milford, Conn.), who finished second with a time of 2:11.20. Senior Caris Mann (Hanover, Mass.) also scored with a ninth-place effort.
Lambert-Shemo led the Lyons in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.07 to place fifth, while Hartmann was eighth in the race. Senior Alexa DiCenso (Methuen, Mass.) also contributed with a fifth-place finish in the 200 IM at 2:17.97 with Walz in sixth at 2:19.66.
Sophomore Anna St. Jean (Alexandria, Va.) turned in a fifth-place effort in the 500-yard freestyle and sophomore Mia Bencivenga (Pittsfield, Mass.) grabbed eighth place in the event. In addition, senior Anne Sweeney (Barrington, R.I.) was Wheaton's top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, coming in 12th.
The Lyons capped the night by placing second in the 400-yard medley relay with a season-best time of 4:03.53. Hartmann set the tone with the lead backstroke, before yielding to Lambert-Shemo in the breaststroke. Stone took over in the butterfly and Walz closed out the race with the freestyle anchor.
Wheaton returns to the pool tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for the second day of the invitational in Bristol.
