Box Score SHERMAN, Texas -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's water polo team outscored Washington & Jefferson College in the second quarter, but suffered a 13-9 loss in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation East Divisional at Hannah Natatorium on the campus of host Austin College in Sherman, Texas.
The Lyons fall to 0-14, while the Presidents improve to 3-11 on the year.
Wheaton owned a 29-25 shot advantage and held a 5-3 scoring margin in the second quarter.
First year 2-meter Michael Ruemelin (Chicago, Ill.) netted two goals and added a pair of steals and an assist, while first year 2M defender Jack Ruggiero (Hamden, Conn.) netted two goals and came up with four steals for the Lyons. First year 2-meter defender Josh Vander Wagen (Brookfield, Ill.) scored two goals in addition to an assist and two steals, while first year attacker Jared Safren (Miami, Fla.) tallied a pair of markers and picked up a pair of steals. First year utility player Spyros Rapsomanikis (Kerkyra, Greece) tallied a goal, assisted on two markers and made a pair of steals. First year keeper Dylan Boccali (Ventura, Calif.) stopped four shots and made three steals.
First year defender Hector Santaella (Key Biscayne, Fla.) paced Washington & Jefferson with a game-high four goals to go with three steals, while sophomore utility player Dillon Parker (Nipomo, Calif.) scored three times and dished out an assist. Junior attacker Kailer Spicer (East Lansing, Mich.) also contributed with two goals and a pair of steals. First year goalie Andrew Rippke (Perrysburg, Ohio) made eight saves for the Presidents.
Washington & Jefferson opened the game with the first five goals to take a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, led by two markers from HS.
Wheaton outscored the Presidents for the rest of the game by a count of 9-8.
The Lyons scored the next three goals, including a pair of markers from Ruemelin to pull within 5-3 in the second quarter of play.
Vander Wagen later found the back of the net to keep Wheaton within two scores at 9-7 in the third period.
Washington & Jefferson tallied three unanswered goals to give it a 12-7 cushion and stop the Lyons' momentum in the third quarter. Wheaton countered with back-to-back goals from Ruemelin and Ruggiero to pull within 12-9. It was the Lyons' final goal of the contest.
The fourth quarter was devoid of offense with W&J netting the only goal of the period to come away with a four-goal victory.
