Men's Water Polo Turned Back by Augustana, 32-4

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's water polo team suffered a 32-4 loss to Augustana College (Ill.) as part of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation East Divisional at Hannah Natatorium on the campus of host Austin College in Sherman, Texas. 

The Lyons slip to 0-13, while the Vikings, who received votes in the most recent Collegiate Water Polo Association national poll, improve to 11-5.

Augustana owned a 42-22 shot margin over Wheaton. 

First year 2-meter Michael Ruemelin (Chicago, Ill.) led the Lyons with a pair of goals and first year 2-meter defender Josh Vander Wagen (Brookfield, Ill.) scored a goal, assisted on another and came up with a steal. First year utility player Spyros Rapsomanikis (Kerkyra, Greece) netted a marker and added three steals. First year goalie Dylan Boccali (Ventura, Calif.) made four saves. 

Senior center Colin McDowell (Hudsonville, Mich.) led all players with 10 goals, while sophomore Ian Palmroos (San Diego, Calif.) scored three times, came up with a pair of steals and registered two assists. Junior attacker Mark Addison (Eads, Tenn.) also scored a trio of markers and assisted on another score for the Vikings. Senior goalie Henry Sothern (Portland, Ore.) denied six shots and also notched an assist.

Augustana tallied the first 18 markers of the match, led by four scores from McDowell. Wheaton cracked the scoring column when Vander Wagen broke through to make it 18-1 in the second quarter. The teams traded goals with junior Tyler Leslie (Aurora, Ill.) scoring for the Vikings and Rapsomanikis finding twine for the Lyons to make it 19-2. 

Augustana scored the next four goals, including three from McDowell, to increase its advantage to 23-2. Ruemelin's first tally for Wheaton cut the deficit to 23-3, before McDowell scored three more times. Ruemelin's second marker was the final scoring strike of the day for the Lyons, pulling them to within 26-4. The Vikings closed out the game with the final six scores. 

Wheaton returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Washington & Jefferson College at 9:00 a.m. in Sherman, Texas, while the Vikings play Pennsylvania State University Behrend on the same day at 10:30 a.m.
