NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team won a pair of singles matches in a 7-2 loss to visiting Wellesley College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play on the Clark Tennis Courts in on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while the Blue improve to 6-4 and 5-0.
Wheaton gained wins at second and fifth singles. First year Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) dropped the opening set at number two singles to Isabella DeAgazio, 6-3, but battled back to lead the second frame, 5-0, before her Wellesley opponent had to retire with an injury. First year Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) won in straight sets for Wheaton over first year Daniela Chiarini (Miami, Fla.), willing her way to a 7-6 (4) first set win, before winning the second set, 6-4.
Wellesley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the dual match with a sweep of doubles play. Junior Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) teamed with classmate Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) at number one doubles for an 8-2 victory over the Wheaton first year duo of Greenlee and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas). Junior Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and first year Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) combined for an 8-3 decision at second doubles over junior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) and sophomore Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) for the Lyons, while first year Isabella DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and junior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, B.C.) downed the Wheaton junior pairing of Zoe West (New York, N.Y.) and Katalyn Foster (Weston, Conn.) by a count of 8-2.
Alviar, Cristiana DeAgazio, Pak and Fan all picked up singles wins as well for the Blue. DeAgazio and Fan each dropped one game in their respective matches at third and fifth singles. Both won by scores of 6-0, 6-1. DeAgazio defeated Ortiz, while Fan downed West. Alviar moved past Mueller at first singles, 6-2, 6-0 and Pak overcame Kruse, 6-0, 6-4 at number four singles.
The Lyons return to the Clark Tennis Courts on Tuesday, April 11 as they host Babson in a NEWMAC contest at 4:00 p.m. The Blue will host Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a 4:30 start time on the same day.
