Women's Lacrosse Falls at Babson, 19-8; LeBeau Notches 100th Career Point

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Junior attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) netted three goals to reach 100 career points for the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team in a 19-8 loss to host Babson College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at MacDowell Field in Babson Park, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers improve to 6-6 and 4-1.

Babson controlled the draw, winning 23 of 31 opportunities and converted two of three free position attempts. Wheaton had a plethora of chances to score in free position situations, but was able to manage just two goals in 10 attempts, including seven attempts without a goal in the first quarter. The Lyons did take advantage of four Beaver turnovers in the fourth quarter to outscore their hosts, 4-2, in the period.

LeBeau scored her third goal of the match for Wheaton at the 11:25 mark in the fourth quarter on a feed from senior attacker Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) to give her 100 career points. LeBeau also added a ground ball. Harvey's assist was one of four points on the day, including three goals to go with five draw controls. Senior attacker Jessie Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) netted a pair of goals, picked up a ground ball and won a draw control, while senior defender Maggie Ryan (Freeport, Maine) collected four ground balls and added a caused turnover and junior defender Kendall Conwell (Weston, Fla.) caused three miscues to go with a ground ball. Senior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped three of 14 shots in 35:59 of play, before yielding to classmate Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.), who turned away one of nine shots in the final 24:01 of action.

Graduate student midfielder Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.) led all scorers with five goals and an assist for Babson in addition to a ground ball and a pair of caused turnovers. Senior middie Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) tallied five points, including a pair of goals and added five draw controls and four caused turnovers. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) found the back of the net three times in addition to an assist, three draw controls, two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Sophomore midfielder Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) dominated the draw with 14 controls for the home team and sophomore goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made 12 saves to earn the win.

The Beavers scored five of six goals in the first quarter, including the first four markers through the opening seven minutes of the contest. Curtis led the charge with a pair of goals. Harvey put the Lyons on the board with an assist from sophomore attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 4-1 with 3:37 remaining in the opening period, before Curtis scored with 56 seconds left to give Babson a four-goal lead at the end of one period of play.

The Beavers scored three times in a span of 70 seconds early in the second quarter to take an 8-1 advantage with 12:02 to go in the session. Wheaton first year attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) fed LeBeau at the 9:36 mark to make it 8-2, but Babson reeled off four unanswered goals, including two from Evans to take a 12-2 margin with 5:09 showing on the second quarter clock. LeBeau notched the final goal of the quarter on a free position shot with 59 ticks left in the period. 

The Beavers began the third period with three straight goals, capped by a score from first year attacker Lilly Bedard (Jupiter, Fla.), to give the home squad a 15-3 cushion. Harvey registered the lone goal in the quarter for the Lyons to pull them to within 15-4 with 6:29 to play in the period. Babson tallied the final two goals before the final quarter to take a 17-4 margin.

Sophomore attacker Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) scored just 42 seconds into the fourth period to give the Beavers their largest lead of the match at 18-4. LeBeau and Harvey each scored the next two goals for Wheaton before sophomore midfielder Kylie McCarthy (Danvers, Mass.) scored for Babson to set the count at 19-6 in favor of the Green and White. Kilburn netted the final two goals of the afternoon for the Lyons to cut the margin to 19-8.

Wheaton is in action again on Saturday, April 15 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College on Nordin Field at 1:00 p.m., while the Beavers head to nearby Wellesley, Mass. on the same day to play league rival Wellesley College at the same time.
