Harvey Nets Career-High Five Goals to Lead Women's Lacrosse over Southern Maine, 10-9

NORTON, Mass. -- Senior attacker Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Mass.) netted a career-high five goals, including the eventual game-winner with just 17 seconds left in the match to lift the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over visiting University of Southern Maine, 10-9, this afternoon at Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 0-3.

Harvey netted the final four goals of the day for Wheaton. First year attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) found Harvey for a score at the 7:46 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Lyons a 9-7 lead with 7:46 remaining in the game, but Southern Maine scored a pair of goals in a span of 50 seconds to knot the contest at 9-9. First year midfielder Molly Black (Windham, Maine) found the back of the net at the 6:20 mark for her first collegiate goal and graduate student attacker Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine) netted the equalizer for the Huskies on a free position goal with a Wheaton player in the penalty box with 5:30 to go in the fourth quarter. 

Southern Maine turned the ball over with 37 seconds left in the match and senior defender Maggie Ryan (Freeport, Maine) carried the ball over midfield before Wheaton called timeout. Sophomore attacker Sophie Gromala (Killingworth, Conn.) held the ball behind the net for the Lyons where she zipped a cross to Harvey in front of the net for the eventual game-winner with just 17 ticks left on the game clock to keep Wheaton perfect at home in three contests.

The match was evenly played all the way around with Southern Maine holding a 28-25 shot advantage and a 13-10 margin on draw controls. The Lyons were able to control possession for the most part with a 19-11 advantage in ground balls and an 11-15 success rate in clears.

Harvey needed just six shots to score five times and added four draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover for Wheaton. Gromala tallied a personal-best five points with a goal and four assists to go with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover, while junior attacker Abigail Mountain (Niantic, Conn.) scored two goals in addition to a ground ball. Junior defender Ailise Cannon (Kensington, N.H.) picked up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers, while Ryan caused three miscues and came up with a pair of ground balls. Senior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped 15 shots for the Lyons to earn the win.

Shanks led the Huskies with three goals and an assist and first year attacker Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine) netted the first two markers of her collegiate career. Sophomore middie Anna Byers (Milford, Conn.) scored a goal and won five draw controls, while first year midfielder Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H. contributed with a goal, three ground balls, three draw controls and a trio of caused turnovers. Junior netminder Cece Racine (Lewiston, Maine) registered 10 saves for Southern Maine.

The Huskies scored three of the game's four first quarter goals to take a 3-1 lead. Hill and Byers each cracked the scoring column in the first four minutes of the game, before Harvey put Wheaton on the board on a feed from Gromala with an advantage goal coming with 4:40 to go in the opening period. Shanks scored with 87 seconds left in the quarter for the visitors' third goal.

Mountain scored both of her goals and sophomore attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) recorded her team-leading 11th score of the season during a three-goal burst to begin the second quarter and give the Lyons a 4-3 edge with 6:42 to play in the period. Wheaton never trailed after that outburst of goals.

Sophomore attacker Emily Cloutier (Brunswick, Maine) scored for Southern Maine, but junior attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) and Gromala each found the back of the net in a span of 57 seconds in the final 2:21 of the quarter to give the home team five of the six markers scored in the period and a 6-4 halftime lead.

Kinney netted her first collegiate goal at 11:15 of the third and Shanks found paydirt on a free position attempt with 5:46 remaining in the quarter for the Huskies to bookend a pair of goals from Wheaton's Harvey to keep it a two-goal game at 8-6 in favor of the Lyons to start the fourth quarter.

Kinney scored just 52 seconds into the final period to pull Southern Maine to within 8-7, before Harvey restored the two-goal margin for the Lyons.

Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, March 8 when it travels to Framingham, Mass. to take on Framingham State University at 4:30 p.m. while the Huskies host New England College on March 13 at 4:00 p.m.
