Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Junior attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) matched her career-high with six goals and senior attacker Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tallied a career-high eight points, including four goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team to a 21-4 victory over visiting Keene State College this evening at Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Owls fall to 1-5.
Wheaton capitalized on 16 Keene State fouls, converting 9 of 14 free position opportunities for scores to contribute to the home team's eye-catching accuracy with 21 goals on 34 shots. The Lyons also dominated the draw, controlling 22 of 29 draws in addition to holding the Owls to just 12 shots and a 9 for 19 success rate on clear attempts.
LeBeau was a perfect 6-6 on shots and added an assist, four draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers to go with a ground ball for Wheaton, while Harvey won seven draw controls, picked up three ground balls and caused a trio of turnovers. Senior attacker Jessie Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) was also perfect needing just five shots for five goals to go with an assist, a game-high 11 draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) made six saves in the victory for the Lyons.
Senior midfielders Haile Ratajack (Brewster, N.Y.) and Mindy St. Marie (Saint Albans, Vt.) each netted a pair of goals to pace the Keene State offense. Ratajack added four draw controls and three ground balls. Senior attacker Jackie DeAngelis (New London, N.H.) contributed with two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. First year starting goalie Kara Moriarty (Groton, Conn.) stopped four of 15 shots in 24:28 of action, while classmate Sarah Howe (Tunbridge, Vt.) turned away four of 14 shots in 35:32 of play.
The Owls scored the first goal of the game when Ratajack found the back of the net with 12:39 to play in the opening quarter. It was the last lead of the night for the visitors as Wheaton tallied the next three goals and never looked back. Kilburn sandwiched a pair of goals around a marker from sophomore attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.), within an 80-second span, to give the home team a 3-1 lead. St. Marie scored to pull Keene State to within a goal with 6:38 left in the quarter, but the Lyons scored the final five goals of the period from five different players to take an 8-2 lead. Three of those scores came in the final 57 seconds with Harvey, LeBeau and first year attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) all finding opponent twine before the horn sounded.
Kilburn and junior attacker Abigail Mountain (Niantic, Conn.) both scored in the first three minutes of the second quarter to bump the Wheaton advantage to 10-2, before Ratajack scored the final marker of the half for the Owls to set the intermission score at 10-3.
The Lyons netted a pair of goals before and two more after a Keene State score to increase their margin to 14-4 after three quarters of play. LeBeau scored twice in the quarter for Wheaton, while St. Marie netted the lone goal for the Owls.
The Lyons scored all seven goals of the fourth quarter, while the Wheaton defense held Keene State without a goal for the final 23:02 of play. LeBeau scored three times in the period, while Harvey found the back of the net on two occasions. Senior Erin Ortega (Merrimack, N.H.) took advantage of her switch to attack with her first marker of the season, while junior attacker Emily Laframboise (Cornwall, Vt.) joined the scoring party with her first goal of the year as well.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, March 25 when it hosts Wellesley College on Nordin Field at 1:00 p.m., while Keene State travels to Biddeford, Maine to take on University of New England on the same day at 10:30 a.m.
