Box Score NEWTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team was swept by host Lasell University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 26-24), this evening at the Athletic Center in Newton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 9-6 on the season, while the Lasers win their school-record 12th straight match to improve to 14-1 for the best start in school history.
Lasell was extremely efficient with a .317 hitting percentage, including a torrid .600 in the opening set, while Wheaton just couldn't get its offense to click with a -.053 hitting mark.
Sophomore outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) paced the Lyons' offense with seven kills to go with three digs and a pair of block assists, while classmate Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) chipped in with five kills, four digs and an ace.
Junior outside hitter Tori Scambray (Brea, Calif.) led the Lasers with a match-high eight kills without committing an error to post a .444 hitting mark in addition to a dig and two block assists. Junior middle blocker Juliana Medina (Roxbury, N.J.) swung for seven kills on a formidable .545 hitting clip and added four aces and four blocks. Sophomore setter Sydney Katz (Ridgefield, Conn.) recorded 16 assists to lead all players and fired three aces to go with two digs and a block, while sophomore libero Maddie Caro (Chula Vista, Calif.) got down for eight digs.
Lasell jumped out to a comfortable 12-5 cushion in the opening set and led by at least six points for the remainder of the frame. Medina led the opening stretch with two kills, two blocks and a pair of aces. The Lasers took the set by a count of 25-15 to take a 1-0 match lead.
Wheaton looked to rebound in the second set, getting out to a 13-7 advantage behind a pair of kills and a block from Henn and two aces from first year libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.). The Lyons later owned a 15-13 margin, before Lasell ripped off nine straight points as part of a 12-2 run to close out the frame for a 25-17 win to take a 2-0 lead in the contest. Medina served up three aces during the closing blitz for the home team.
The Lasers opened a 10-4 margin early in the third set, before a 7-2 burst, including a pair of kills and a block from Henn, cut the deficit to 12-11 for Wheaton. The Lyons were within a point five separate times after that and finally pulled even at 21-21 following a kill from Henn. Lasell took a 23-22 edge, but a kill from Henn and a block assist from sophomore right side hitter Saskia Habibe (Miami, Fla.) and senior middle blocker Megan Kelleher (Wethersfield, Conn.) put the Lyons on the brink of taking the set at 24-23. The Lasers regained their focus and scored the final three points of the match, including a pair of aces from Katz to win the set (26-24) and the match.
Wheaton returns to the court on Tuesday, October 10 when it hosts New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Mount Holyoke College at Emerson Gymnasium for a 7:00 p.m. start, while Lasell travels to New London, Conn. to play Mitchell College at 11:00 a.m. on October 7.
