Box Score KEENE, N.H. -- Senior midfielder Darien Webb (Hamden, Conn.) and junior attacker Jessie Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) each tallied four points with three goals apiece to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over host Keene State College, 16-4, this evening at the Owl Athletic Complex in Keene, N.H. The Lyons win their third straight game to improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Owls fall to 0-3.
The Wheaton defense allowed more than one goal in only one quarter during the match and controlled possession for the balance of the contest with a 44-6 shot advantage and a 16-8 margin on draw controls.
Webb established a career-high for goals and points, while adding three draw controls for the Lyons, while Kilburn added two ground balls, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) contributed with two goals and two assists in addition to three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a game-high eight draw controls. Sophomore attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) and sophomore attacker Abigail Mountain (Niantic, Conn.) each chipped in with a pair of goals each. Junior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) made two saves for Wheaton.
Senior attacker Brigid Casey (Mount Vernon, N.H.) led Keene State with two goals and an assist to go with a game-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior midfielders Haile Ratajack (Brewster, N.Y.) and Mindy St. Marie (Saint Albans, Vt.) each tallied a goal for the Owls, including a ground ball for each and two caused turnovers for St. Marie. Senior goalie Haley Terva (Granby, Conn.) registered 11 saves.
First year midfielder Gabriella Smart (Oakland, Maine) cracked the scoring column first for the Lyons just 1:52 into the match, before St. Marie matched her just over two minutes later to knot the score at 1-1 for the Owls. Wheaton began it's offensive clinic after that with nine of the next 10 goals, including five unanswered in the first quarter to take a 6-1 lead. Kilburn and Webb each scored twice during the early run. Casey scored for Keene State on a feed from St. Marie with 2:23 to play and just 25 seconds after the Lyons' last goal to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Wheaton netted the first four goals to open the second quarter and take a 10-2 advantage. Mountain scored twice to open the quarter, followed by LeBeau and Kilburn -- all within a five-minute period for the Lyons. Casey scored the only marker of the quarter for the Owls at the 4:42 mark of the quarter, before first year middie Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) found the back of the net with 3:25 remaining in the first half to give Wheaton an 11-3 cushion.
The Lyons scored all four goals of the third quarter, including scores from Adeline Paradis (Saco, Maine), first year attacker Sophie Gromala (Killingworth, Conn.), Webb and Harvey, to give them an insurmountable 15-3 lead heading into the final quarter. Ratajack netted Keene State's final goal with 12:01 showing on the fourth quarter clock, before Harvey capped the scoring for the visitors with 5:27 remaining in the game.
Wheaton returns to play on Wednesday, March 16 when it travels to nearby Bridgewater, Mass. to take on Bridgewater State University at 7:00 p.m., while the Owls head to Arlington, Va. to play Marymount University at 5:00 p.m.
