Box Score NORTON, Mass. — Despite a handful of chances late in the match for both teams, the Wheaton College (Mass.) and United States Coast Guard Academy men's soccer teams played to a 0-0 tie this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play on Keefe Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons are now 6-4-6 overall and 1-2-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Bears are 9-2-4 and 2-2-2.
Wheaton honored its seniors prior to the match. Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.), Gabriel Fellows (Middletown, R.I.), Eric Galindo (Tucson, Ariz.), Cam Millington (Fairfield, Conn.), Ewan Noble (Newport, R.I.) and Kris Strempel (Longmeadow, Mass.) were all recognized in their last regular season home match for the Lyons.
Wheaton outshot Coast Guard 11-8 and also held a 5-3 margin on corner kicks.
Neither team put a shot on net in the opening half, but the final 15 minutes of the match saw some tense moments.
First year midfielder Aki Freeman (San Diego, Calif.) ripped a shot from the top left corner of the box for the Bears, but Lyon junior defender Ryan Bell (Wayne, Pa.) was there to block it for Wheaton with 14:10 to play.
The Lyons had their own chances off a pair of free kick opportunities just outside the upper right corner of the box in the final six minutes of the match. First year midfielder Ethan Thompson (Norwell, Mass.) fired a shot ticketed for the far left post with 5:07 to go, but the ball was boxed around and then turned away by the Coast Guard defense. Thompson had another chance with 3:16 showing on the clock, but his try went wide right.
Coast Guard had one final opportunity to crack the scoring column in the final seconds of the game. Junior midfielder Charles Fish (Little Silver, N.J.) sent a free kick into the box, where sophomore forward Lucas Tabit (Warrenton, Va.) came across the box and sent a shot toward the left side of the net with 67 seconds remaining, but was denied by a diving stop from Millington.
Millington finished with two saves for the Lyons, while junior goalie Josh Hudson (Tempe, Ariz.) recorded a pair of saves for the Bears.
Wheaton returns to action on Tuesday, October 25 when it heads to Framingham, Mass. to take on Framingham State University at 4:30 p.m., while Coast Guard travels to Dartmouth, Mass. to play University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on the same day at 7:00 p.m.
