Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- Senior outside hitter Emily Hickey (Kennebunk, Maine) spiked a career-high 20 kills to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team over visiting Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 25-20) this afternoon in the second match of a tri-match at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons had fallen to Western New England University, 3-2, earlier in the day, before improving to 10-10 with the win over Eastern Connecticut. The Warriors fell to 14-6 with the loss. They had previously beaten, WNEU, 3-0.
Prior to the match, Wheaton honored its five seniors, Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.), Hannah George (Duxbury, Mass.), Ariana Rajaee (Marlborough, Conn.), Sophie Wilhelm (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Hickey.
The Lyons came out roaring in the opening set against Eastern Connecticut with a .367 hitting mark as part of a .330 hitting clip for the match. Wheaton hit at least .259 in every set of the contest. The Warriors finished with a .205 mark and matched returned the favor in the second set with a .400 hitting effort. The teams traded sets to open the match, before the home team took the final two frames for the win.
Hickey hit a blistering .621 for the match with just two attack errors to go with two block assists. Madrzyk finished with a .375 hitting clip to bolster a 12-kill effort and George set for 35 assists to go with 10 kills and fell just three aces short of a triple-double with seven. Rajaee picked up eight digs and served for two aces.
Barry led the Warriors with 13 kills and hit .375 and sophomore right side hitter Bella Johnson (Marlborough, Conn.) added 10 kills. First year outside hitter Sadie Blackwell (Southbury, Conn.) chipped in with eight kills and five digs. Verizzi finished with 25 assists and five digs in three sets, while Perez got down for 15 digs.
Wheaton returns to play on Tuesday, October 18 when it hosts No. 21 Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Emerson Gymnasium in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action, while Eastern will travel to Plymouth, N.H. for a noon tri-match with Plymouth State University and Regis College.
