Box Score 2 NORTON, Mass. – Junior middle hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.) put away double-digit kills in each match as Wheaton College women's volleyball split its two matches on the second and last day of the Wheaton Invitational. The Lyons posted a 3-0 win over Farmingdale State College, before falling to Middlebury College, 3-1, this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons are now 6-1 on the season for their best start since the 2018 campaign. The Panthers improve to 5-0 and Farmingdale State is 2-5.
Farmingdale State defeated Worcester State University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-21) earlier in the day, while Middlebury disposed of Rhode Island College in three sets, 25-10, 25-8, 25-7. RIC picked up a win later in the day, defeating Worcester State in straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, 28-26.
Wheaton defeated Farmingdale State, 25-23, 25-14, 25-14, before falling to Middlebury, 25-13, 25-10, 22-25, 25-16.
The Lyons hit .324 for the match, including a clip of .588 in a third set that included no attack errors against Farmingdale State. Madrzyk hit a blistering .556 with 11 kills and just one attack error to go with a block assist for the Lyons against FSC. Senior outside hitter Adara Hamilton (Mercer Island, Wash.) contributed on both sides of the net with six kills, two aces and a match-high 14 digs. Sophomore setter Zoë Franz (Noblesville, Ind.) fired three aces, picked up four digs and set for 15 assists. Sophomore right side hitter Mikayla Profeta (Mineola, N.Y.) and first year middle blocker Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) each put down seven kills for Farmingdale State with Profeta hitting .500 for the contest. Sophomore setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) set for 20 assists and picked up three digs, while junior libero Madisyn Pozo (Bayside, N.Y.) got down for 11 digs.
Wheaton was the only team to take a set off of Middlebury when it hit .324 to earn a third-set win. It was also the only match in the tournament to go more than three sets. Madrzyk put down 10 kills to go with a pair of aces and Hamilton swung for seven kills in addition to nine digs and two aces. Franz posted a double-double of 14 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Annah Shaheen (Portsmouth, N.H.) spiked for eight kills and came up with three digs. Senior outside hitter Maggie Wise (Winchester, Va.) was dominant for the Panthers, swinging for a match-best 20 kills fueled by a .405 hitting mark to go with five aces and seven digs. Senior outside hitter Jane Nelson (Hopkins, Minn.) served for a match-high six aces in addition to putting away 12 kills and getting down for 14 digs for a double-double. First year setter Gabbie O'Toole (Overland Park, Kan.) directed the Middlebury effort with 34 assists and added 12 digs and three kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Kelly Ferrero (San Francisco, Calif.) scooped up 21 digs and fired a pair of aces.
Junior outside hitter Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.) led Farmingdale over Worcester State with eight kills to go with four digs, while Ricketts swung for seven kills. Pozo picked up 20 digs and added a kill. Senior outside hitter Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) led all players with 10 kills for Worcester State and senior defensive specialist Brooke Lamothe (Tewksbury, Mass.) picked up 10 digs and added an ace.
Junior outside hitter Amelia Murphy (North Attleboro, Mass.) fueled Rhode Island College over Worcester State with nine kills, five digs and two total blocks and first year outside hitter Rhiannon Hodovanec (Feeding Hills, Mass.) contributed with five kills and three aces for the Anchorwomen. Junior Wynter Conlon (East Walpole, Mass.) led the RIC defensive effort with 12 digs. First year setter Angela Colonis (Waterford, Conn.) paced the Lancers with eight kills, 10 assists, two aces and four digs, while senior outside hitter Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) registered five kills and a dig.
Middlebury put together a .366 hitting mark against Rhode Island College, while holding it to just a -.111 attack percentage. Senior middle hitter Corley Doyle (San Francisco, Calif.) led the Panthers with eight kills and a block assist, while O'Toole set for 26 assists and fired two aces. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Kraczkowsky (Chicago, Ill.) served up five aces, added six digs and put away a pair of kills for Middlebury. Senior right side hitter Eden Anthony (Cranston, R.I.) chipped in with four kills in six swings for a .667 hitting mark for RIC.
The Lyons will be in action again on Tuesday, September 14 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to open New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play with a 7:00 p.m. match against Springfield College.
