Women's Volleyball Remains Unbeaten with Two Wins at Wheaton Invitational

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team won both of its matches in just three sets, while the Middlebury College squad also took just six sets to win both of its matches tonight at the Wheaton Invitational at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton College. 

The Lyons improved to 5-0 after a 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 victory over Rhode Island College and a 25-15, 26-24, 25-16 win over Worcester State University. Middlebury downed WSU, 25-9, 25-17, 25-15 and defeated Farmingdale State College, 25-12, 25-19, 25-10. 

Farmingdale pulled out a triumph over Rhode Island College, 25-23, 25-11, 25-19. 

Wheaton improves to a perfect 5-0, while Middlebury remains unblemished at 3-0. Worcester State is now 1-5, Farmingdale State stands at 1-4 and Rhode Island College is 1-2. 

Wheaton hit .279 for the match against Rhode Island College, including a .423 mark in the middle set. Senior outside hitter Adara Hamilton (Mercer Island, Wash.) led all hitters with nine kills on a .462 hitting mark to go with three aces for Wheaton against RIC, while junior right side hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.) enjoyed a dominant stretch behind the service line, resulting in four aces to go with seven kills and block assist for the Lyons. Sophomore setter Zoë Franz (Noblesville, Ind.) also fired four aces and added four digs and 11 set assists. 

Junior outside hitter Amelia Murphy (North Attleboro, Mass.) led the Rhode Island College attack against Wheaton with five kills and a pair of aces. Junior libero Wynter Colon (East Walpole, Mass.) contributed with six digs and three assists for the Anchorwomen. 

Wheaton's offensive attack was extremely effective against Worcester State, posting a .387 hitting mark and did not hit less than .379 in any set against the Lancers. Madrzyk dominated vs. Worcester State with a match-high 15 kills on a robust .652 hitting percentage in addition to a block assist and Hamilton swung for 10 more kills on a .500 hitting clip to go with six digs and three aces. Franz finished a dig shy of a double-double with 20 assists and nine digs, while junior defensive specialist Ariana Rajaee (Marlborough, Mass.) got down for 15 digs and served up an ace for the Lyons. 

Worcester State received six kills each from senior outside hitter Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) and first year Angela Colonis (Waterford, Conn.) against Wheaton. Colonis added 11 assists and 10 digs and swung at a .400 clip for the match. 

Middlebury senior outside hitter Maggie Wise (Winchester, Va.) put down 13 kills and committed just one attack error to fuel a .444 hitting mark against Worcester State. Junior middle hitter Lucy Ambach (Garden City, N.Y.) hit .500 for the match and put down eight kills to go with four total blocks and three aces to give her 13.5 points for the contest. First year setter Emma Cortina (Kenilworth, Ill.) directed the action for the Panthers with 24 assists in addition to seven digs and two block assists. 

Leelle put away 10 kills and senior outside hitter Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) spiked for eight kills to go with five digs and two block assists for Worcester State vs. Middlebury. 

The Panthers hit an impressive .480 in their win over Farmingdale State as Wise (11 K, 1 error) and senior outside hitter Jane Nelson (Hopkins, Minn.) (11 K, 0 errors) combined for 22 kills and just one attack miscue. Wise also picked up eight digs. First year setter Gabbie O'Toole (Overland Park, Kan.) set for 29 assists and came up with three digs for Middlebury. 

First year outside hitter Madeline Stanley (Massapequa, N.Y.) spiked for seven kills to lead Farmingdale. First year outside hitter Cathleen Farrell (Bayport, N.Y.) recorded five kills and three digs, while sophomore setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) set for 21 assists and junior libero Madisyn Pozo (Bayside, N.Y.) picked up 10 digs against Middlebury. 

Farmingdale rebounded against Rhode Island College for its first win of the year. Cavalieri registered 27 assists, three aces and four digs, while Farrell spiked for eight kills on a .462 hitting percentage. Pozo picked up 11 more digs and fired a pair of aces. Murphy led RIC with a match-high nine kills to go with seven digs and sophomore defensive specialist Aubrey St. Onge (Tilton, N.H.) posted a double-double of 11 digs and 11 assists. Conlon got down for 12 digs as well. 

All five teams will return to action tomorrow for the second day of the Wheaton Invitational. Worcester State takes on Farmingdale State and Middlebury plays Rhode Island College, both taking place at 11:00 a.m. at Emerson Gym. Wheaton will open the day against Farmingdale at 1:00 p.m.
