Box Score QUINCY, Mass. -- The Wheaton College men's soccer team fell in overtime, 2-1, to host Eastern Nazarene College this evening in the season opener for both teams at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy, Mass. The Lyons dip to 0-1-0, while the Lions improve to 1-0-0.
Wheaton cracked the scoring column first with a marker early in the opening half when sophomore forward Luke Strange (Portland, Ore.) buried his first collegiate goal on a cross from the left side from junior Alberto Franceschi (Caracus, Venezuela). The score gave the Lyons a 1-0 edge less than three minutes into the second half.
Wheaton looked to have its first win of the season in hand, but junior defender Carlos Moya (Oviedo, Spain) breathed life into the home team when he curled in a direct free kick from just outside the 18-yard box to even the match at 1-1 with 49 ticks left on the clock. Moya continued his heroic night, scoring again in the final minute with the game-winning tally coming with 53 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Moya headed home the golden goal to collect his second marker of the contest as Bryan Vargas (San Jose, Costa Rica) registered his first assist of the fall.
The Lions concluded the match with 10 shots while the Lyons recorded eight attempts.
Senior keeper Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) stopped three shots for Wheaton, while senior goalkeeper Tyler Ferreira (Berkley, Mass.) made a pair of saves in his first start of the season to earn the victory for Eastern Nazarene.
