Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Three different players scored and senior keeper Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) denied a penalty kick to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team in a 3-0 shutout over visiting Emerson College this afternoon in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest at Keefe Field on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons win their third straight match and improve to 7-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in league play, while the Lions fall to 2-6-1 and 0-3-0.
Wheaton owned a 15-10 shot margin and held a 4-3 edge on corner kicks.
The teams played scoreless ball for just over 30 minutes until the Lyons got on the board in the 32nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Wheaton sophomore midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) sent a quick cross inside the box to junior forward Avery Santoro (North Chatham, Mass.), who sent a rocket into the bottom right corner for his team-high fourth goal of the season.
The goal proved to be all the Lyons needed with a defensive effort that included six saves from Medina. The keeper stopped a prime attempt for the Lions to score in the 12th minute when he made a diving stop to his right to keep junior midfielder Shane Biathrow's (South Windsor, Conn.) penalty kick try off the board.
Wheaton added an insurance score in the 70th minute when senior midfielder Charlie Stringer (Medford, Ore.) converted his own penalty kick attempt for his fourth goal to keep pace with Santoro for a share of the team lead.
The Lyons scored again with just 6:18 showing on the second half scoreboard when first year forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) crossed to senior midfielder Niall Blackadar (Warwick, R.I.) for his second goal in as many games and a 3-0 lead.
Medina's shutout was the fifth of the season and 11th of his career for Wheaton. First year goalie Jacob Ramer (Los Angeles, Calif.) made two saves for Emerson in the loss.
The Lyons return to action on Wednesday, October 6 when they host Mitchell College at 4:00 p.m. on Keefe Field, while the Lions host Emmanuel College (Mass.) on October 5 at 6:00 p.m.
