Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Keene State 11-6

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. - The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team hit the road for a non-conference match-up against Keene State at the Owl Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon, with the Lyons pulling out an 11-6 victory.

Seniors Giovanna Bishop and Angela Mallis got the scoring started, putting Wheaton up 1-0 a minute and a half into the contest. The Owls tied the game just seconds later on an unassisted goal by Gabby Smith. Smith found Kelly Chadnick for back-to-back goals over the next eight minutes, giving Keense State a 3-1 advantage.

First-year Molly Covarrubias cut the Lyon deficit to one after converting a free-position shot with 18:15 to go in the first half. Smith pushed the Owl lead back to two after netting her second goal of the contest a few minutes later.

The Lyons countered with three unanswered goals to end the opening half of action, starting with another Covarrubias goal, this time with help from Jen Lovett. First-year Lilly Callahan knotted up the game with 7:27 on the clock with a good free-position shot. Mallis found back netting for the second time three minutes later with a feed from Hannah Gasperoni, earning the lead back for Wheaton, this time for good.

Wheaton carried the momentum into the second half, starting the period with five straight goals. Callahan and Covarrubias combined for the first goal of the second frame, while Mallis collected the hat-trick with a good free-postion take. Callahan picked up an assist with 14:47 to go in the game, finding an open Julia Lustenader. Maddy Lahm and Mallis ended the Lyons scoring frenzy, with Lahm converting a free-position shot of her own, while Mallis netted her fourth goal of the game.

Taylor Graf ended the Owl's scoreless streak with a good free-position shot, which was counteracted by another goal from Mallis. Tess Masci put one away for Keene State in the final minute but it would not be enough.

Galicia Rothe got the start for the Lyons, playing 13:33 in net, before being replaced by Molly Witten

Wheaton returns to action on Sunday, March 26 at Trinity (Conn.) for a 3 p.m. contest.
