NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team fell 15-5 in their home opener against the No. 2 nationally ranked Trinity College Bantams in a non-conference matchup at Nordin Field on Sunday.

Wheaton moves to 2-1 overall with the loss. Sophomore Katie Peters and junior Angela Mallis sparked the momentum for the Lyons at the start of the game with two goals in the first five minutes, both assisted by senior Jenna Tewksbury. Senior Madison Cohen and Mallis went on to score three goals combined in the second half to bring the Lyons up to five.

Trinity was led offensively by senior Martha Griffin who tallied six goals and one assist with junior Clare Lyne adding four goals of her own. Sophomore Kiley Coffey, sophomore Georgia Mergner, sophomore Abby McInerney, first-year Olivia Johnson all added solo marks in the win.

The Bantams scored their first nine goals during the first half with Griffin sweeping in a mark 00:44 and Lyne transferring the momentum to knock in her own goal at 00:21.

Griffin opened the second half, registering three additional goals in the first two minutes, and then the Bantams answered a two-goal Wheaton tally with a 4-0 run that put the game out of reach at 15-5.

Trinity held a 9-4 advantage in draw controls and collected a 14-11 list in ground balls. The Bantams outshot Wheaton 23-12.

Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Molly Witten claimed six saves in the 60 minutes of action, moving to 2-1 overall while Trinity sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Ferguson advances to 2-0. 

The Lyons travel to Wesleyan (Conn.) on Wednesday with game time scheduled for 5 p.m.
