WALTHAM, Mass. - First-year Maddy Morrison made a big splash in the Wheaton College women's swimming & diving 2016-17 season opener when she broke two diving records to help the Lyons defeat the Brandeis University Judges, 185-102 on Saturday.
Morrison not only broke the one-meter (six dives) record with a 266.17 final, but also the one-meter (11 dives) record with a 464.62 final score. She crushed Julia Wright's one-meter (six dives) record from back in 2010 and Sydney Gillis' one-meter (11 dives) record that was set in 2012.
Wheaton opened the meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay when they clocked in a final of 1:55.29 thanks to senior Kelley Baylis, first-year Erin Kean, sophomore Rowan Rice and junior Aleza Epstein. Kean also secured first place in the 100-yard breaststroke when she dished out a 1:11.93 final for Wheaton.
Sophomore Molly Gibson and senior Emily Girard led the way for the Lyons during the 1,000-yard freestyle when they timed 11:50.98 and 12:02.29 finals respectively. Wheaton went on to secure three of the top five places in the 100-yard backstroke with Baylis (first), first-year Katherine Vitello (third) and sophomore Jesse Stewart (fourth).
In the 50-yard freestyle, first-year Caitlin Daley and Epstein tied for first place whey they collected a 26.32 final time. Epstein went on to place first in the 100-yard freestyle at 55.99 with Daley right behind her in second at 57.19.
Junior Jenna Hayden recorded her own first place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.93) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.16) to wrap up individual competiton for the Lyons.
Wheaton hosts their season opener on Saturday against Bentley University in a dual meet with action kicking off at 1 p.m. in Balfour Natatorium.
