NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's swimming & diving team split their meet against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Wednesday evening. The Lyons defeated Dartmouth 212-63, but dropped 168-115 against WPI.
Wheaton opened the meet with the 200-yard medley relay race. Relay team Jacob Cost, Samuel Zarfos, Jonathan Dunnett and Frederick Garneau secured a first-place victory with a final time of 1:38.27.
Daniel Spencer and Timmer Sposato placed second and third for the Lyons during the 200-yard freestyle race with final times of 1:54.15 and 1:55.38. Garneau captured first-place in the 100-yard backstroke at 55.29 with Chris Steward right behind him in third at 59.16.
Todd Lambert clocked in at 50.95 in the 100-yard freestyle for the Lyons to gain a second-place spot. Dunnett later tapped in at 2:22.94 for the 200-yard breaststroke to receive a third-place position.
Richard Davies took over at the diving board for Wheaton by securing a first-place finish in the three-meter dive with a final score of 247.28. He went on to also place first in the one-meter with a 235.43 final score.
The Lyons helped wrap up the meet with the 200-yard individual medley race where they collected the top three spots with swimmers Kevin Silva in first (2:10.14), Zarfos in second (2:10.64) and William Sweet in third (2:17.53).
Ending things on a high note, relay team Fredette, Lambert, Spencer and Garneau captured first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:31.22 final. Sposato, Raymond Bortolot, Steward and Dunnett followed them immediately in second at 1:33.23.
The Lyons travel to Tufts University on Saturday with action beginning at 1 p.m.
