Box Score NORTON, Mass. -Taking the court at Emerson Gymnasium for the first time this season, the Wheaton College volleyball team earned a 3-1 (28-26, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19) win over visiting Brandeis University on Tuesday night.
The Lyons improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Judges fall to 2-5 overall. The Wheaton win marks the first time since 2005 that the Lyons have defeated the Judges.
Kendall Jacobs paced the way for Wheaton with a match-high 14 kills, ending the night with a .458 attacking percentage. Elise Waelder ended the night with 10 kills for the Lyons, while teammate Deirdre Wilson had nine. Wilson concluded the night with a match-high 26 assists and team-high 14 digs. Claire Cansler was strong at the net for Wheaton, ending with a match-high eight blocks, while Jacobs denied the Judges five times.
Grace Krumpack led Brandeis with eight kills and Leah Pearlman had a team-high 18 assists. Yvette Cho ended the night with a match-high 17 digs.
The opening set was competitive from start to finish with neither side owning more than a two point lead. In the end the two point advantage went to the Lyons, who pulled out the 28-26 win.
Wheaton captured an early lead in the second set, on two Brandeis errors, and never looked back. The Lyons largest lead of the set came on a kill by Wilson that made it an 18-12 contest. The Judges pulled back within three points, but Wheaton closed out the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-19.
Brandeis came out strong in the third set, taking an immediate 10-3 lead. Trailing 21-11, the Lyons settled down, rattling off eight unanswered points to make it a 21-19 game. Despite the late set rally, Wheaton would not be able to capture a lead, falling 25-21.
The fourth and deciding set saw the Judges pull ahead at the beginning just to have the Lyons come from behind once again. This time however, Wheaton had enough to overcome their opponent, pulling out an impressive 25-19 win.
The Lyons return to the court on Friday, Sept. 11 at the Jim Coleman Invitational. The Lyons open with Aurora at 3 p.m., followed by Central (Iowa) at 5 p.m.
