Box Score Mallis scores game-tying goal with two seconds left in regulation
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) buried a free position goal with two seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team eventually dropped a 17-15 decision to MIT on Wednesday night in a league matchup at Jack Barry Field.
In overtime, Hannah Levy (Yardley, Pa./Princeton Day School) gave the Engineers a 16-15 advantage with her fourth and final goal of the game at the 4:20 mark of the extra session. MIT then held Wheaton to zero shots over three-plus minutes before Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn./Greenwich Academy) netted the game-clinching goal with 25-seconds left to play.
MIT first-year Emily Young (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) led all scorers with six goals in addition to four ground balls and three draw controls. Schott added five goals, while Levy contributed four strikes to highlight the Engineers' offense.
Mallis and juniors Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk), Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Jenna Tewksbury (Concrd, N.H./Concord) all finished with hat-tricks for the Lyons. Hannah Gasperoni (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet), Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) all potted solo strikes to round out Wheaton's scoring.
Bush also dished out two assists and scooped up a pair of ground balls in the loss.
MIT outshot Wheaton, 31-28, held a 35-25 advantage in ground balls and compiled a 25-9 differential in draw controls. The Engineers also posted a 19-for-22 showing on their clear attempts. The Lyons went 7-for-9 in free position attempts and 24-for-29 in transition.
Tied 9-9 at the half, MIT opened up the second stanza with three-straight goals, two of which came from Young. Bush countered for the Lyons with her third goal of the night at the 21:24 mark of the second half before Young answered with 18:17 left to play to make it 13-10.
Mallis responded with back-to-back strikes at 17:30 and 12:52, respectively, to cut into the deficit at 13-12. Both teams then traded goals before Levy put MIT ahead by two with 5:55 to go in the contest.
Tewksbury put Wheaton within one at the 3:46 mark with a free position goal, her 28th tally of the season, and the Lyons prevented MIT from any scoring chances down the stretch to set up Mallis' late game heroics.
With 1:55 left to play, sophomore defender Lydia Regan (Medford, Mass./Medford) caused a turnover to give Wheaton a chance at tying up the matchup. After the Lyons turned in a successful clear attempt, Mallis drew a foul and promptly buried the free position attempt for her 14th goal of the season.
Wheaton senior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) stopped seven shots in the loss. MIT first-year goalkeeper Eva Boal (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Winsdor-Plainsboro North) made a game-high eight saves to improve to 12-2 on the year.
Wheaton (9-6, 5-2 NEWMAC) travels to Wellesley on Wednesday, April 22 at 4 p.m. to close out its regular season. MIT (12-2, 5-1 NEWMAC) hosts Emerson College this Saturday at 1 p.m.
