Box Score Lyons now 2-3 on the season
HARTFORD, Conn. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-5 decision to No. 8 nationally ranked Trinity College on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup on Sheppard Field.
Wheaton received solo tallies from sophomore Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), juniors Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord), Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and senior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) in the loss.
Trinity was led offensively by senior Molly Cox (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) who registered five goals and one assist for a game-high six points. Renee Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy) also added four goals apiece in the win.
The Bantams scored goals on its first nine shots to lead, 9-1, with 10:35 left in the first half, as Cox, Griffin and Olsen all scored twice in the opening 20 minutes. Trinity sophomore Emma Malicki (Loudonville, N.Y./Albany Academy) added a tenth Batams' tally with 5:48 on the clock, but Sharick scored 20-seconds later and also fed Tewksbury on the final goal of the first half with 3:27 left for a 10-3 score at the break.
Griffin and Cox opened the second stanza with markers in the first 2:14, and then the Bantams answered a Wheaton tally by Mallis with a 4-0 run that put the game out of reach at 16-4 with 14:35 remaining. Olsen scored twice more during the Trinity spurt to finish with her four goals for the evening.
Trinity held an 18-7 advantage in draw controls and fashioned an 8-4 margin in ground balls. The Bantams also outshot Wheaton 28-10 and went 5-for-7 on their clear attempts.
Wheaton senior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) made three saves, while first-year backup Molly Witten (Bethesda, Md./Dublin School) matched Ananian in saves in just 11:31 of action. Trinity goalkeepers Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y./Kent) and Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) both made one save each as both student-athletes split halves in net.
Wheaton (2-3) hosts Endicott on Saturday, March 14 on Nordin Field at 1 p.m. Trinity (3-1) travels to Bates this Saturday for a conference matchup slated for 12 p.m.
