Box Score 2 NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College volleyball team hosted both MIT and Framingham State on Saturday afternoon in Emerson Gymnasium.
In New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action, the Lyons fell to the Engineers 1-3 (17-25, 28-26, 18-25, 21-25) in the opening contest. Wheaton then went on to beat FSU in straight sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) in non-conference action.
The Lyons move to 7-11 on the season and 1-4 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers are now 17-1 overall and 6-0 in conference action. Framingham State moves to 13-4 overall.
vs. MIT
Arieanne Creighton led the Lyons with a match-high 15 kills, while Kendall Jacobs finished with 10. Deirdre Wilson collected a match-high 35 assists, while also collecting 17 digs and a block. Stephanie Martin led the Lyons with a match-high 23 digs. Destinee Dubose and Claire Cansler ended the match with two blocks.
Megan Gebhard led the Engineers with 15 kills and Lisette Tellez ended the match with 12. Fiona Tanuwidjaja dished out 24 assists and Tori Wuthrich came up with 16 digs, while Tellez collected 15. Alli Davanzo led all players with five blocks, while Abby Bertics had four and Tellez three.
With the first set tied at 4-4, the Engineers put together an 8-0 rally that saw them shoot ahead to a 12-4 advantage. Wheaton would not be able to recover from the deficit. The second set proved to be far more competitive than the first. Trailing 24-19, the Lyons put together a 5-0 rally courtesy of five Engineer attacking errors. Wheaton closed out the set with a kill by Jacobs and yet another Engineer attacking error.
MIT owned the entire third set which began with a 13-5 lead. The fourth and final set started as a back and forth battle, but MIT settled down down the stretch. With the set tied 19-19, MIT closed out the match with a kill by Tellez and four from Gebhard, as well as a Lyon attacking error.
vs. FRAMINGHAM ST.
Jacobs led the Lyons against FSU, knocking down a match-high 14 kills. Wheaton had 11 of its 15 players that took the court finish with at least a kill. Wilson once again led the team in assists, this time dishing out 24, while Martin had a match-high nine digs. Dubose led all players with four blocks, while Sarah Alexander, Jacobs and Taylor Matook each had three.
Alycia Rackliffe led the Rams wtih 14 kills, while Sarah Leonard ended the match with 17 assists. Leonard, Julia Wan and Rackliffe each finished with a block.
After falling behind 5-2 in the opening set, the Lyons tied the contest at 10-10 with help from kills by Wilson and Matook. An ace by Jacobs earned Wheaton its first lead of the match, a lead that they would not relinquish.
Wheaton came out firing in the second set, earning a 6-1 lead right out of the gate. The Lyons would not trail at all in the second set, finishing with a solid .481 attacking percentage.
The third set started similarly to the first with the Rams earning an early lead. Wheaton tied the match at 13-13 on a Wilson kill and never looked back.
