Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Deirdre Wilson picked up her third triple-double of the year on Tuesday night, but it was not enough to lift the Wheaton College volleyball team past host Clark University. The Cougars defeated the Lyons 3-2 (25-11, 22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10) in the Kneller Center.
The loss drops the Lyons to 11-13 on the season and 3-5 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Cougars improve to 17-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
Wilson, who ranks 12th nationally in triple-doubles, earned 10 kills, 38 assists and 12 digs for the Lyons. Elise Waelder led the team in kills with 13, while Arieanne Creighton finished the night with 11. Stephanie Martin came up with a team-high 25 digs for Wheaton and Olivia Wilson pulled up 15. Creighton, Waelder and Taylor Matook all led the Lyons with three blocks.
Marina Ramos and Ana Mercado led all players with 15 kills, while Shannon Glass-Smythe had 10 for Clark. Rachel Webb ended the night with 38 assists. Defensively, Mia Cattaneo had 25 digs and Ramos led all players with four blocks.
The first set was all Clark, as the Cougars cruised to an easy 25-11 win.
Wheaton responded in the second set, coming out of the gates firing, racing to a 7-3 advantage. The Lyons pushed their lead to 20-14 over the next couple of plays. Clark fought its way back in, pulling within 22-20, but Wilson and Kendall Jacobs put down kills to secure the win.
The third set started as a tightly contested back and forth with the Cougars holding a slim 11-10 advantage. Wheaton countered with a 10-4 surge that made it a 21-15 contest. Like in the second set, the Cougars pulled within a few points, but the Lyons closed out the set with a monster kill by Waelder.
With the fourth set tied at 16-16, Clark pulled ahead to a 19-16 lead which was capped off by a Glass-Smythe ace. The Lyons responded, knotting the match at 23-23, forcing the Cougars hand. Clark was up to the challenge though, closing out the set with kills by Mercado and Glass-Smythe.
In the fifth and final set, a strong serving game by Clark proved to be the difference. With the set tied at nine all, the Cougars registered six of the next seven points to seal the victory.
The Lyons return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 24 for a match against DeSales (10 a.m.) and Widener (12 p.m.) at DeSales.
