Box Score NORTON, Mass.- Wheaton College men's soccer sophomore Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) recorded a game-winning goal for the second consecutive match Wednesday afternoon, this time leading his Lyons to a 3-2 non-league win over regionally-ranked Western New England University on a rain-soaked Keefe Field.
The Lyons, who had an opponent score on them for the first time this season, ran their unblemished mark to 3-0. Ranked eighth in the region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Golden Bears fall to 1-2.
Blair was on the receiving end of a through ball from senior Will Nesbitt (Holliston, Mass./Holliston), who pushed his pass from the center of the field to a streaking Blair for the finish at 64:32. Blair also assisted a go-ahead marker earlier in the half on a beautiful give-and-go started by freshman Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I./Wheeler School).
Western New England sophomore Chris Bruton (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) used his head in the 13th minute for a 1-0 Golden Bear edge, but Wheaton sophomore Marlon Ramalho (Framingham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) knotted the match at 24:15 thanks to a long serve from senior David Turina (North Yarmouth, Maine/Northfield Mount Hermon School) on the right flank to the far post.
Following halftime, the Lyons took their first lead of the game 3:02 into the second frame on Gil's strike, but just over four minutes later junior Ryan Williams (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) deked a couple of Wheaton defenders at the top of the box before getting his shot past the Lyon goalie.
Wheaton sophomore goalie Jeff Paer (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) made six saves to improve to 2-0 this fall. Visitor senior keeper Nick Starr (Somers, Conn./Somers) stopped two shots in the loss.
In an evenly played match, Western New England finished with an 18-15 advantage in shots and Wheaton held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.
The Lyons hit the road for the first time this Saturday when they travel to New Hampshire to take on Keene State College at 1:00 p.m.
