Lyons sweep visiting Salve Regina in non-league action

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team won for the fourth time in five meetings against visiting Salve Regina University on Thursday night, as the Lyons swept the Seahawks, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 26-24) in non-league action at Emerson Gymnasium.

Wheaton raised its overall record to 8-6, while Salve Regina fell to 3-9.

Lyon freshman Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) led a balanced hitting attack with 11 kills, sophomore Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford) recorded nine, while classmate Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) had seven.

Senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) tallied 28 assists and eight digs.  Classmate Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) had a team-high 23 digs, while Jones and junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) added nine each.

Freshman Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio/John Glenn) paced the Seahawk offense with 10 kills, and senior Lisa Zabel (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) contributed 14 assists.  Sophomore Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) added 14 digs.

In the opening set, the hosts scored five straight points to break a six-all tie and take an 11-6 lead.  Wheaton stretched its advantage to seven on three occasions before Salve narrowed its deficit to 20-17, but the Lyons finished out the set on a 5-2 run for the early edge.

The Blue and White broke a 4-4 knot with three consecutive points in the second set and didn't look back, jumping out to as large as a seven-point edge twice.  The Seahawks brought the contest to 22-18 before the Lyons eventually closed things out on a Jones kill.

The final set was the tightest of the three, with the teams experiencing 12 ties, including the last one coming at 24-all.  Wheaton trailed 23-22 but leaned on Jones down the stretch, as the freshman's kill snapped the final tie before another provided the Lyons with the match victory.

Wheaton takes on a pair of regionally-ranked teams during a tri-match this Saturday, facing host Trinity College at 12:00 p.m. and Roger Williams at 2:30 p.m.  Trinity is ranked seventh in the most recent New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) poll, while Roger Williams is eighth.
