Lyons play to third double-overtime draw of season, this time at MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team scored a second-half goal to force extra sessions before settling on a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season finale on Roberts Field.

With the tie, the Lyons and Engineers will have a rematch one week from today in the semifinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament.  Second-seeded MIT and third seed Wheaton will play at Babson College at 1:30 p.m.  The Lyons are 10-5-3 overall and 3-2-1 in league play, while the Engineers, who are ranked seventh in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America), are 10-2-2 and 4-0-2.

After a slow start that saw MIT hold first-half edges of 4-3 in shots and 7-3 in corner kicks, Wheaton turned the table following the intermission and outshot the Engineers by a 16-4 count while taking all eight corners.

Sophomore Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, Mass./Rivers School) knotted the game at one with a 72nd-minute tally from classmate David Turina (North Yarmouth, Maine/Northfield Mount Hermon School).  Senior goalkeeper Chris Smart (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) was credited with three saves.

MIT broke the stalemate on a goal by junior Zachary Kabelac (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) at 22:03.  Classmate Dylan Rankin (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown School) finished with four stops between the pipes.

After scoring, Wheaton continued its offensive push and had multiple chances at a go-ahead goal.  Senior Josh Solomon's (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) blast was turned away by Rankin, while Jeffrey's header on the following corner kick sailed over the crossbar.  The Lyons' final opportunity in regulation came when senior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) was faced with an open net but misfired.

Jeffrey also made his presence felt in the extra sessions, as his first shot just missed the target while his second was blocked by an MIT defender.  Less than 30 seconds into double overtime, Jeffrey found an open Moreira, but his redirect went wide.
