NEW LONDON, CT- During her first collegiate game in her home state, Jeana Trimboli (Norwalk, CT/Trinity Catholic) scored a season-high 24 points and knocked down a Wheaton College women's basketball freshman record six three-pointers to help the Lyons snap a four-game losing streak with a 72-54 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday in Merriman Gymnasium.

The Lyons, now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), won at Coast Guard for the first time since January 26, 2000, snapping a four-game losing streak in New London. The Bears slipped to 2-2 and 1-1.

Trimboli shot 8-of-13 overall and 6-of-11 from long distance, becoming the first Wheaton player since Kerry Deshefy '03 on January 31, 2002, to can six threes. She was also just one trey off the nearly 16-year-old school mark for long-range shots in addition to totaling six assists and five rebounds. Trimboli's display led to the Lyons hitting 10 threes for the first time since January 5, 2002, and Wheaton committed only 11 turnovers while forcing 25 on its way to holding a 29-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Senior Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) was the only other Lyon in double figures, totaling 10 points to go along with six rebounds and three blocks. Classmate Ida Kruse (Vershire, VT/Rivendell Academy) added nine points and five boards, and freshman Gabby Barbera (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) collected eight points and four steals.

Senior Sabrina Taylor (Lake Worth, FL/Lake Worth) totaled 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Coast Guard, while classmate Melissa Martinelli (Vero Beach, CA/Sebastian River) had eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Freshman Karli Collins (Delavan, WI/Delavan-Darien) added eight boards.

Wheaton rushed out to 15-6 lead fewer than six minutes into the game, with Trimboli burying a pair of three-pointers. The Bears edged to within 17-15 by 9:23 before Trimboli countered with another trey to spark a 12-0 run, capped by a Kruse jumper with 3:32 to go that made it 29-15. The visitors took a 38-25 advantage into the locker room after Coast Guard had yielded a total of 38 points or fewer in an entire contest during two of its first three games.

The Lyons continued to hold a double-digit lead until Taylor's three with 9:45 left in regulation brought Coast Guard within 50-42. The Bears got as close as 54-47, but Trimboli nailed two threes to make it 60-47, sparking an 11-0 run in a 2:35 stretch that put the visitors in control. Wheaton didn't allow a basket after Coast Guard's hoop at 7:54 until 23 ticks were left.

Wheaton returns to action on Monday at 7:00 p.m. to host Tufts University, which is receiving national votes from D3hoops.com.
