NORTON, Mass. — Senior forward Regan Keyter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored her 1000th career point for the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team in a 63-44 loss to visiting Babson College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Emerson Gymnasium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons end their campaign at 5-20 overall and 1-10 in league play. The Beavers finish at 17-8 record and 9-2 and will compete in the upcoming NEWMAC Championship Tournament on Tuesday, February 24 as the number two seed, hosting seventh-seeded United States Coast Guard Academy.
Keyter became the 16th player in school history to reach 1,000 points with a layup in the fourth quarter and finished her career with 1,006 points. The Lyons also recognized their senior class prior to the game, paying homage to Keyter, Kennis Jasperson (Sacramento, Calif.), Madeline Duwe (Greenville, S.C.) and Catherine Penick (Bedford, N.H.).
Both teams struggled from the floor during the game with Babson shooting 30.1% (22-73) and just 52.6% (10-19) from the line, while the home team hit 31.1% (19-61) of its field goal attempts. Wheaton connected on just 3-21 (14.3%) from three-point range. The Beavers committed only eight turnovers, while the home Lyons turned the ball over 16 times, resulting in a 10-2 points off turnovers disparity for Babson. The Beavers also controlled the boards with a 50-43 rebounding advantage including 19 offensive caroms that resulted in a 16-7 margin in second chance points.
Keyter finished with a game-high 17 points and added five rebounds, a block and an assist for Wheaton. Junior forward Cheynne Colbert (Brookline, N.H.) posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in addition to two assists, a pair of blocks and a steal.
Sophomore guard Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led Babson with 14 points to go with six rebounds, two assists and a steal, while sophomore forward Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) netted 10 points, pulled down two rebounds and handed out three assists in 21 minutes of action. Sophomore forward Mary Kate Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) contributed with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Keyter converted a layup from the right side to give her 1000 points and pull the Blue and White within 50-26 at 9:04 of the final quarter. Senior guard Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) gave the Beavers their largest lead at 55-28 with a three-ball coming with 7:50 remaining in the contest. The Lyons put together their most impressive offensive stretch of the day, outscoring Babson, 14-5 over the next five minutes, paced by six points from Keyter to pull Wheaton within 60-42 with 2:53 to go in the contest.
The Beavers scored the first 14 points of the game, backed by six points from St. Laurent, to establish the tone for the afternoon. Keyter put the Lyons on the board with a layup at the 5:10 mark of the opening quarter. Babson went on an 8-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Rosenberg to give the visitors a 22-4 advantage with 1:20 to play in the quarter. Carlo converted a pair of free throws to close out the period to maintain the Beavers' margin at 24-6.
Sophomore guard Daniella MacDonald (Newtown, Pa.) knocked down a triple to open the second quarter and cut the deficit to 24-9 for Wheaton, before Babson scored six of the next eight points, including a trifecta from sophomore forward Brooke Canty (Dover, Mass.) to increase the Beavers' lead to 30-11 with 4:35 remaining in the first half. Rosenberg scored the final points of the quarter with a jumper from outside the paint to make it 34-15 for Babson with 68 seconds to play in the second quarter.
Keyter made one of two free throws to keep the difference at 37-18 at 8:10 of the third quarter for the Lyons, before the Beavers scored the next five points to increase their cushion to 42-18 with 7:04 left in the third quarter. Wheaton first year forward Katelyn Cadmus (Pawacatuck, Conn.) reduced the margin to 19 again at 43-24 with 1:52 showing on the third quarter clock, but Babson closed the period with the final five points, including four from first year guard Sophie Mahar (Wakefield, R.I.) bump the visitors' lead to 48-24 before the end of the quarter.
