NEW LONDON, Conn. — Juniors Cam Cross (Newport, R.I.) and Logan Quinn (Portsmouth, R.I.) each placed sixth in their respective field events to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's track & field team on the first day of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship at host United States Coast Guard Academy's Nitchman Field in New London, Conn.
The Lyons scored six points after one day of competition and are currently in sixth place, while No. 9 Massachusetts Institute of Technology is firmly in first place with 89 points.
Cross registered a mark of 49.36 meters in the javelin throw, while Quinn posted a distance of 43.40 meters in the hammer throw. Sophomore Kieran Templeton (Glens Falls, N.Y.) posted a mark of 36.09 to finish 15th in the hammer throw for Wheaton.
The Lyons are set up well for tomorrow's 110-meter hurdle final after three Wheaton competitors placed among the top eight to qualify. Sophomore Gavin Landry (Sebago, Maine) clocked in with the fifth-fastest time in school history at 14.91 to place fifth, while classmate Joshua Wright (Gorham, Maine) finished seventh with a personal-record time of 15.55. Junior Kevin Smith (Norfolk, Mass.) qualified with an eighth-place finish after posting a personal-best time of 15.58. First year Liam Reagan (Scarborough, Maine) shattered his personal-record mark with a time of 15.88 to finish 10th.
Smith also placed 13th in the long jump for Wheaton with a leap of 5.94 meters, while first year Elijah Pinney (Brockton, Mass.) was 14th with a distance of 5.41 meters. Senior GJ Mualis (Taunton, Mass.) finished 19th in the 100-meter preliminaries for the Lyons.
Wheaton returns to the track tomorrow in New London for the final day of the NEWMAC Championship.
