Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- Domination in the doubles powered the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Emerson in Tuesday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match in Norton.
Wheaton improved to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC after the win. Emerson fell to 4-10 overall and 0-6 in the NEWMAC after the loss.
The number two doubles pairing of
Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and
Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) made quick work of their opposition, junior Kendi Bispham (Tortola, V.I.) and sophomore Abigail Miner (San Diego, Calif.). The Lyons took down the Lions' tandem with ease, dispatching them with a 6-0 win.
The Texan tandem of
Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and
Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) also won their doubles match with ease in the number one position. They took down first year Teah Login (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Alisha Pimenova (Kyiv, Ukraine) 6-2 to clinch the doubles point for Wheaton.
First year
Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior
Taylor Wilson (Derry, N.H.) completed the doubles sweep with another 6-2 win over senior Jayden Beverly (Dupont, Wash.) and first year Anna Matsuura (Okinawa, Japan).
Wilson completed her singles match first, downing senior Carlson Jones (Cleveland, Ohio) in straight sets. The junior blanked her senior opponent, taking 6-0 wins in both sets to give Wheaton a 2-0 lead.
Hollis finished her match against Pimenova next. The junior won from the number four position in straight-sets as well. Pimenova was able to keep it to a 6-2 loss in the first set, but Hollis cranked up the heat in the second frame to win 6-0. Wheaton took a 3-0 lead after the win.
Ortiz replicated Hollis' successful win by defeating Miner in straight-sets as well. Just like Hollis, Ortiz took a 6-2 win in the first before improving in the second set to win 6-0. The win from number three singles gave Wheaton the match victory, but the final score still had to be decided.
Greenlee finished next, and unfortunately came up short in the number one singles match. Login defeated the Wheaton senior in straight-sets. Greenlee climbed close to make it a 6-4 loss in the first set, but Login tightened the leash in the second set to win 6-3.
Haraj-Sai had to contend with junior Amaya Briones (Mexico City, Mexico) in the number two singles match. Briones powered her way to a 6-4 win in the first set, but Haraj-Sai pushed back to take the second set 6-3. The resulting tiebreaker was easily claimed by Haraj-Sai as she took the extra point with a 10-6 win.
Junior
Isabella Cottrell (Melrose, Mass.) was the last to finish in the number six singles match. Her tie with junior Gianna Di-Reumante (McLean, Va.) went the longest out of any match played in the contest. Di-Reumante needed the extra point to take the first set as she fought hard for a 7-5 win, but Cottrell roared back to life in the second frame to win 6-3. The momentum was fully on Wheaton's side heading into the tiebreaker, and Cottrell made the most of it with a 10-2 win in the extra set. Her win in the last singles match gave Wheaton a 6-1 win over Emerson at home.
Wheaton will return to action on Saturday at noon as they travel to Beverly, Mass. to play Endicott. Emerson will host Clark University for a match on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Boston.
