Women's Tennis Sweeps Salve Regina, 7-0

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was perfect as they won all seven points to earn a sweep victory over Salve Regina in Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match in Newport.

Wheaton improved to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC following the win, while Salve Regina fell to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC after the loss.

Wheaton opened up the day with an emphatic sweep of the doubles. The number one pairing of seniors Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) took down the Seahawks' top tandem of juniors Kaydin Pinto (Acushnet, Mass.) and Anna Grace Hjerpe (Northborough, Mass.) with a 6-1 win.

The Texan Tandem's quick win was followed by junior Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) in the number two match. Junior Madigan Murphy (York, Maine) and senior Sadie Rieg (Carlisle, Pa.) were able to score four points, but the Wheaton pair won the match 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.

The third doubles pair of first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior Taylor Wilson (Derry, N.H.) waltzed their way to a 6-0 win over junior Stephanie Davis (Kinnelon, N.J.) and senior Cayla Dolan (Cheshire, Conn.) to end the doubles with a Wheaton sweep.

Ortiz was first to finish her singles match, taking down Hjerpe in straight-sets from the number three position. Ortiz started off strong with a 6-1 win in the first set, and improved further in the second as she won 6-0.

Hollis repeated the straight-set victory with a win in the number four singles match. Murphy was held scoreless in the first set as Hollis cruised to a 6-0 victory, but managed to scrounge together two points in the second set as Hollis won again 6-2.

The number six singles match featuring Robinson and Rieg was next to finish. Robinson made it another straight-set win for Wheaton as she dismantled Rieg 6-3, 6-2 to secure the win for Wheaton. Haraj-Sai also won her match in the number two position in straight-sets. Davis was able to make it 6-2 in the first set, but Haraj-Sai made quick work of her in the second set as the Wheaton Lyon won 6-1.

Greenlee and Pinto squared off in the number one singles match, and Pinto won the first set 6-4 to give Salve Regina their only set victory of the contest. Greenlee came roaring back to life in the second set as she took down Pinto with a 6-2 win to force a tiebreaker. Greenlee pulled away late after exchanging points with Pinto to win the extra frame 10-8. Wheaton swept Salve Regina in Newport for a 7-0 conference victory.

The Lyons will return to the surface on Tuesday, April 14 as they host Emerson College for a NEWMAC match at 3:30 p.m. Salve Regina will take on Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
