NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was downed by visiting Connecticut College, 7-0, this afternoon in a dual match at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 1-3 on the season, while the Camels remained unblemished at 2-0.
Connecticut College swept through doubles play to earn the first point of the match, before winning all six singles matches.
Maya Kowalska and junior Mary Ella Prendergast (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) did not drop a game in a 6-0 victory at number one doubles over the Wheaton senior duo of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas). Connecticut College sophomore Asahi Goods (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) paired with Lily Kerachsky to earn a 6-3 triumph at second doubles over the Lyon junior combo of Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda). Sophomores Marylove Reynolds (Little Rock, Ark.) and Teagan Skulley (Middleton, Mass.) joined for a 6-2 win at number three doubles over Wheaton junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.).
Prendergast was taken to the limit in the opening set by Ortiz, but eked out a 7-6 (4) result, before winning the second frame, 6-1, to take the match for Connecticut College. The Camels pulled out the final two points in three sets at fifth and sixth singles. Senior Sana Bhat (New Delhi, India) outlasted Wilson at fifth singles. She won the first frame, 6-4, before Wilson rebounded with a 7-6 (5) decision to send the match to a third set. Bhat finished out the match with a 12-10 tie-breaker in the third frame. First year Nicolette Baksay (Colonia, N.J.) came away with Connecticut College's final win with a three-setter over Robinson. Baksay breezed through the first frame, 6-1, before Robinson answered with a 7-5 victory in the middle set. Baksay grabbed the third set, 10-7.
Kowalska rolled through number one singles over Greenlee with a 6-0, 6-2 decision, while Good cruised at fourth singles with a 6-4, 6-2 effort over Hollis. Kerachsky earned a 6-4, 7-5 win at number two singles over Haraj-Sai to give the Camels their fourth point to seal the match.
The Lyons return to action to take on College of St. Scholastica on a neutral court at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m., while the Camels return to play on Monday, March 2 when they host Smith College at 4:00 p.m.
