Men's Tennis Blanks Colby-Sawyer, 7-0

NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team swept singles play and won two of three doubles to gain the first point in a 7-0 shutout over visiting Colby-Sawyer College this afternoon at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 2-2.

Wheaton boasted four double-winners in the dual match.

Junior Jamie Gálligo (Madrid, Spain) combined with first year Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) for a 6-0 win at number one doubles for the Lyons over senior Ashton Meuse (Newport, N.H.) and first year Oliver Gore (Southend by the Sea, U.K.). Gálligo cruised at first singles, dropping just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over senior Zsombor Homonnay (Budapest, Hungary), while Wyshner took down Gore at number three singles, 6-2, 6-3, to deliver Wheaton's fourth point and the win. .

Junior Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) paired with Lyon sophomore Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) to record a 6-3 win at number three doubles over sophomore Jacob Riis (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and first year Max Biedermann (Stowe, Vt.) to capture the doubles point for Wheaton. Berteaux kept the winning going at fourth singles over senior Peyton Meuse (Newport, N.H.) in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Munoz outlasted Ashton Meuse with a three-set triumph at number two singles. Munoz earned a 6-4 opening set win, before Munoz matched him with a 6-4 response in the middle frame. Munoz won the tie-breaker, 7-3, to take the third set, 7-6, for the match win.

Juniors Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) and classmate Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) avenged a doubles loss at number two with respective singles victories for the Lyons. Van Dyke defeated Riis in easy fashion at 6-3, 6-0 at number five, while Murray closed out the match at sixth singles with a 6-3, 6-4 effort over Biedermann. 

Homonnay and Peyton Meuse put together a 6-3 showing over Van Dyke and Murray in doubles action.

Wheaton returns to the courts tomorrow when it travels to New London, Conn. to take on Connecticut College at Noon, while Colby-Sawyer squares off with George Fox University on March 16 in Orlando, Fla.
