NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team began the spring portion of its season with a 7-0 loss to visiting No. 23 Brandeis University this afternoon at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons slip to 1-2 on the season, while the Judges improve to 2-0.
Brandeis boasted five double winners on the day with a win in both singles and doubles play in the dual match.
Junior Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) led Wheaton, winning five games in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to first year Avani Chitale (Ahmedabad, India) at number four singles. Junior Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison Conn.) won three games in a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at the hands of junior Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India). The Wheaton pair were also taken down at number two doubles by first year Milana Sofizade (Sarasota, Fla.) and senior Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China), 6-0.
Senior Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) suffered a set back at first singles for the Lyons to junior Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines), 6-0, 6-2, while senior Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) was downed by Zhang, 6-0, 6-1 at number three singles. Greenlee and Ortiz picked up two games in a 6-2 loss to Reyes and senior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y.) at number one doubles.
Junior transfer Isabella Cottrell (Melrose, Mass.) won three games in the second set of her Wheaton debut in a 6-0, 6-3 defeat to first year Galia Harmelin (Seattle, Wash.) at sixth singles. First year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) was turned back at number five singles by Sofizade, 6-0, 6-0, to close out the match for the Judges. Robinson teamed with junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) at number three singles, but the pair were defeated, 6-1, by Budhbhatti and Chitale at number three doubles.
The Lyons return to the courts on March 1 when they host Connecticut College at Beard Field House, while Brandeis plays again on February 16 at 2:00 p.m. against Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif.
