Hoadley Gives No. 9 Men's Soccer a 3-3 Tie at No. 18 Brandeis with First Collegiate Goal

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore back Austin Hoadley (South Kent, Conn.) tallied his first collegiate goal in the 76th minute of play to give the No. 9 Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team a 3-3 tie against host No. 18 Brandeis University this afternoon at Gordon Field in Waltham, Mass.

The Lyons, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national poll, extend their unbeaten streak to eight straight games and are now 6-0-2, while the Judges, who are ranked in the same survey, are also 6-0-2.

Brandeis owned an 18-12 shooting advantage and controlled possession in the first half with a 10-1 shot margin, before Wheaton flipped the momentum in the second half. The Lyons also boasted a 6-3 margin in corner kicks for the match.

Senior midfielder Aidan Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) sent a thru-ball to Hoadley on the top right corner of the 18-yard box. Hoadley played a touch toward his defender to get inside the box, where the keeper came out to cut off the angle, but Hoadley fired a shot inside the near right post to pull the Lyons even at 3-3 with 14:53 to play in the contest.

Doyle looked to score just 38 seconds prior to the game-tying marker when he fired a shot from the right side into the far post for the visitors, but the Brandeis senior keeper Tyler Correnti (West Newbury, Mass.) made a diving stop to his right to keep the home team's one-goal lead intact.

Three of the six goals in the match came via a penalty kick. The Lyons' first two shots of the contest were both successful penalty kicks off the foot of Doyle.

The Judges scored the first two goals of the game in a span of 77 seconds within the opening 12-plus minutes to become the first Wheaton opponent to tally multiple goals this season against the Lyons. Senior forward Elan Romo (Weston, Fla.) was taken down by a Wheaton player in the box to draw a penalty kick for Brandeis. Senior midfielder Rainer Osselmann-Chai (Acton, Mass.) fired a low shot on the ground into the left side of the net, while the Wheaton keeper guessed with a dive to the right. The marker was the second of the year for Osselmann-Chai, coming in the 11th minute for the Judges. Brandeis doubled their lead in the 13th minute to make it 2-0. Junior midfielder Kenshin Murakawa (Osaka, Japan) served a ball from the Judges' defensive zone into the Lyons' defensive zone, where Romo ran onto the ball, before chipping a shot in the air and over the Wheaton keeper for the two-goal margin.

The Lyons cut the deficit in half when junior midfielder Ben Kane (Pembroke, Mass.) was tripped up from behind to give them a penalty kick. Doyle fired a shot inside the right post and just beyond the fingertips of the diving Brandeis keeper in the 23rd minute of play. It proved to be the only shot of the half for Wheaton as the teams went into the intermission with the Judges holding a 2-1 lead.

Romo factored in Brandeis' third goal as well. The senior lifted a cross from beyond the left side of the box to the goalmouth, where senior midfielder Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J.) scored on a header in front of the net to give the Judges a 3-1 lead at the 50-minute mark.

The Lyons got the goal back right away with their second successful penalty kick of the match. Junior forward Declan Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) was tripped up on the left side of the box to draw the PK early in the 53rd minute. Doyle followed with this second goal of the contest and his team-leading seventh of the season to pull Wheaton within one on just its second shot of the game with 37:58 remaining in the contest.

Hoadley threatened to register his first collegiate score 22 minutes earlier than his eventual game-tying tally. The defender looked to tie the game in the 53rd minute with a shot from the right slot for the Lyons, but the Correnti made a diving stop to his right to preserve the Judges' margin.

Senior keeper Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) recorded six saves for Wheaton, while Correnti stopped three shots for Brandeis.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 27 when they host New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Clark University on Keefe Field at 2:00 p.m., while the Judges host John Carroll University on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
