No. 9 Men's Soccer Blanks Clark, 3-0

NORTON, Mass. – Three different players scored and the No. 9 Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team's defense surrendered just three shots in a 3-0 victory over visiting Clark University (Mass.) this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play this afternoon at Keefe Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national poll, extend their unbeaten streak to nine to begin the season at 7-0-2, including a perfect 2-0 mark in conference play, while the Cougars dip to 3-3-1 and 0-1-1.

Wheaton allowed just two shots on frame for the day, while peppering Clark with 28 shots, including nine on net. The Lyons scored all three of their goals in a span of 8:52 with one marker to end the first half and two scores in the opening four minutes of the second session.

Both teams were scoreless through the first 39-plus minutes before Wheaton got on the board with 5:03 remaining in the opening stanza. First year forward Vinny McGann (Chelmsford, Mass.) threaded a cross to the right slot, where sophomore midfielder Charlie Cushing (Eastham, Mass.) slipped a feed to the front of the net for senior Baden McLaughlin (Yarmouth, Maine). The midfielder sent a touch to the back of the net for his fourth marker of the season in the 40th minute of play for a 1-0 Wheaton edge.

The Lyons added two more goals in the first four minutes of the second half to increase their margin to 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Jack Morlock (Brookfield, Conn.) served the ball from the right corner flag, off a corner kick, into the box, where junior back Owen Kane (Pembroke, Mass.) sent a bullet shot with the side of his head into the back of the net. The goal was his third marker of the season, just 2:20 into the half.

Wheaton tacked on its third goal, just 89 seconds later, to give the Lyons a three-goal cushion with 41:11 to play in the game. Sophomore forward Gael Vera (Westminster, Mass.) weaved around two defenders before dribbling the ball to the right slot, where he sent a cross to senior back Kevin Morse (Acton, Mass.) in the middle of the box. Morse finished the play with a shot into the far left post for his first collegiate goal.

First year back Theo Massie-Vereker (Penobscot, Maine) led the Cougars' offense with a pair of shots, including the only shot on frame and a shot that was deflected by the Lyons' defense and into the hands of the home keeper.

Senior goalie Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) was credited with two saves to record his second shutout and 19th of his career for Wheaton, while senior keeper Diego Marin (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) made six saves for Clark.

The Lyons return to action on Wednesday, October 1 when they host Anna Maria College at 3:30 p.m. on Keefe Field, while the Cougars host Worcester State University on the same day at 7:00 p.m.
