Women's Tennis Defeated by No. 16 MIT, 7-0

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team fell to No. 16 Massachusetts Institute of Technology this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons slip to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Engineers, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, improve to 8-2 and 3-0.

MIT dropped just three games combined in doubles play to gain the first point of the dual match. The visitors won all six of their singles matches in straight sets as well.

Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) paired with first year and fellow Texan Choe Zeng (Austin, Texas) to capture a win at number two doubles for the Engineers over the Wheaton sophomore duo of Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda), 6-1. Sophomore Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and MIT first year Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) did not drop a game in a 6-0 triumph at number three doubles over junior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.)

All four of the Engineers won in singles play as well. Zeng posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lyon junior Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) at number one, while Lu earned a straight set 6-2, 6-2 decision over Haraj-Sai at second singles. Samets dropped just two games at number three singles against Wheaton junior Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) in a 6-0, 6-2 win. Sun also surrendered just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number four singles over Hollis.

The junior tandem of Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) combined on a 6-1 triumph at first doubles for the Engineers over Greenlee and Ortiz.

Sophomore Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) cruised past Wilson at fifth singles with a 6-0, 6-2 effort and MIT sophomore Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) put together a 6-1, 6-3 win over Wheaton first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) at number six singles.

The Lyons return to the courts when they head to Springfield, Mass. to play Springfield College in league play on Saturday, April 5 at 12:00 p.m., while the Engineers travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on NEWMAC foe Clark University on the same day at 10:30 a.m.
