NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated, 6-1, by host Smith College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at the Indoor Track and Tennis Complex in Northampton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 6-11 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the Pioneers improve to 8-9 and 5-3.
Wheaton earned the number six seed and will travel to Babson Park, Mass. to face third-seeded Babson College on Tuesday, April 29 at 3:00 p.m., while fourth-seeded Smith will host number five seed Springfield College on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
Smith won two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point in the dual match. The Pioneers also won five of six singles matches.
Wheaton was credited with their only point in the match with a win at fifth singles. Sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) trailed 5-4 in the opening set, before Smith first year Alexa Konstantopoulos (Waltham, Mass.) was unable to continue and retired. Wilson also combined at number three doubles with Lyon junior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) to earn a 7-6 (5) victory over sophomore Sophia Dube (Portland, Ore.) and first year Tabitha Bastress (Charlotte, Vt.).
Wheaton sophomore Laila Haraj-Sai (Manchester, Conn.) bounced back from a 6-1 opening set defeat to win the second frame, 6-3, at number two singles against Pioneer senior Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.). Goshgarian pulled out the win with a 10-2 decision in the third-set super tie-breaker. First year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) also took her Smith foe to three sets for the Lyons. Brennan won the first set 6-4 over Dube, before the Pioneer rebounded to take the middle frame, 6-0 and the third set, 10-6.Â
Goshgarian teamed with her sibling, Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) for a 6-2 win at number one doubles over the Wheaton junior tandem of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas). Sophomore Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, Texas) and first year Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) teamed at number two doubles for a 6-2 triumph as well for Smith. They defeated Haraj-Sai and sophomore Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda).Â
Greenlee fell at number one singles to Hauser, 6-2, 6-1, while Ortiz was overcome by Lili Goshgarian at number three singles, 6-0, 6-1. Bastress put together a 6-1, 6-2 showing at fourth singles for the Pioneers over Hollis.
